Chapter 3 - Protocol Black

Thousands of miles away, inside a high-security corporate server room located in Zurich, Switzerland, a silent digital switch flipped.

A high-priority data packet burst through a secure, quantum-encrypted tunnel, landing directly on the private terminal of Samuel Vance—my lifelong attorney, legal executor, and the only man alive who knew the true architecture of my multi-billion-dollar corporate empire.

On my bedside monitor screen, a confirmation text prompt blinked softly into view, rendered entirely in silent text:

Message transmitted to Samuel Vance.

Text: “Samuel, activate Protocol Black. Transfer the assets. Release the toxicology report to the District Attorney’s office. Do not warn David.”

A heartbeat later, the response appeared on my screen:

Confirmed.

Samuel Vance: “Protocol Black initiated. All private trusts are freezing. The forensic lab report is en route to DA Marcus Thorne via encrypted courier. The trap is sprung. Hang on just a little longer, Eleanor.”

A wave of icy, fierce adrenaline flooded my veins, temporarily counteracting the sluggish paralysis of the heavy metal poison creeping through my muscles.

David believed he was holding all the cards. He believed that when I drew my final breath, my traditional will—drafted by a local family lawyer he had carefully vetted and bribed two years ago—would automatically grant him total ownership of our Beverly Hills estate, our luxury vehicles, and every accessible investment account.

He had no idea that the will he thought existed was a carefully orchestrated decoy.

Months ago, anticipating this exact betrayal, I had executed a secret primary will and trust reorganization with Samuel. The real legal documents dictated that upon my death—or upon the execution of Protocol Black—every single residential property, vehicle, and liquid asset would instantly be transferred out of my name and into a charitable foundation dedicated to global animal rescue and medical research.

Furthermore, all joint accounts were hard-locked by corporate executive override. David’s credit cards, his private investment funds, and his access to my business lines of credit would instantly collapse into a frozen void the second Samuel hit the master server switch in Zurich.

And most importantly of all:

Hidden inside the decorative floral crown molding directly above my bed, two ultra-high-definition micro-cameras—equipped with directional studio-grade microphones—had been recording every single conversation, every threat, every confession, and every poisoned meal served in this room for the past six months.

Every drop of thallium. Every mocking laugh. Every plan for my murder.

It was all safely backed up in three separate redundant offshore cloud drives that even a federal subpoena could not erase.

“Do you think she can hear us?” Jessica asked suddenly, lowering her voice just a fraction, glancing sideways at my motionless form on the bed.

David followed her gaze, stepping away from the window and walking slowly to the side of my bed. He looked down at my pale, waxen face, his expression hardening into one of cold, calculated detachment.

“It doesn’t matter if she hears us or not,” David said, his voice completely devoid of any human warmth. “Her nervous system is practically shut down. The doctor said she won't survive the week. By tomorrow morning, the heavy sedation will do the rest.”

Jessica smiled, stepping close to him and pressing her red lips against his cheek. “You’re so ruthless, David. That’s why I love you.”

“Just be patient, sweetheart,” David murmured, running his hand down her arm. “By tomorrow, she’ll be gone. And everything she built... everything she owned... will belong to us.”

He was right about one thing.

Tomorrow, I would be gone from this bed.

The medical charade would end. But by the time David stood beside my coffin at the grand funeral he had already started planning in his head, the police, the federal prosecutor, and one unexpected witness would already be waiting for him at the front gates.

And Jessica was about to discover a horrifying truth:

She had never been David’s only secret.
