Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Six months after the trial concluded, my international architecture firm officially unveiled its latest masterpiece: The Luminary Center, a sprawling, state-of-the-art medical research and toxicology institute funded entirely by the Eleanor Vance Foundation.
It was built on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean—a monument to science, transparency, and the unyielding pursuit of truth.
I stood on the expansive glass observation deck of the new institute, watching the afternoon waves roll onto the shore below. The heavy velvet drapes of my old bedroom were a distant memory, replaced here by floor-to-ceiling glass walls that invited the brilliant, unfiltered sunlight in from every angle.
Samuel walked up beside me, holding a pair of architectural blueprints.
“The board of directors just approved the global expansion for our smart-city infrastructure protocols in Zurich and Tokyo,” Samuel said with a proud smile. “Your empire is stronger, larger, and more secure than it has ever been.”
“Good,” I replied, tracing my fingers along the smooth glass railing. “An empire is only as strong as its foundation. And ours is locked in steel.”
“What about personal life?” Samuel asked gently, looking over at me. “Any plans to let anyone back into your inner circle?”
I chuckled softly, turning to face him.

“My inner circle is reserved for people who value truth over gold, Samuel,” I said. “As for romance? Let’s just say I’ve retired from auditing human character the hard way.”
He laughed, shaking his head. “Fair enough.”
