Chapter 7 - The Unravelling of an Empire

By evening, the news networks had completely exploded.
BILLIONAIRE ARCHITECT SURVIVES HUSBAND’S THALLIUM POISONING PLOT; HIGH-SOCIETY CONSPIRACY EXPOSED IN BEVERLY HILLS.
Headlines flashed across every major news channel, accompanied by mugshots of David Vance and Dr. Alistair handcuffed in federal orange, alongside paparazzi photos of Jessica being escorted from the estate in tears.
Inside my newly secured home—now cleansed of every trace of deceit—I sat in my corporate study overlooking the illuminated valley of Los Angeles.
Samuel Vance sat across the mahogany desk, turning the pages of a comprehensive asset-recovery audit.
“The courts have granted an emergency asset freeze across all of David’s domestic and offshore holdings,” Samuel reported, adjusting his glasses. “His personal accounts have been seized under federal anti-fraud statutes. Every penny he attempted to siphon or divert has been traced and legally recovered. Furthermore, Dr. Alistair has confessed to signing fraudulent medical documents in exchange for a promised cut of the estate payout. He’s cooperating fully with the D.A. to secure a plea deal.”
“And Jessica?” I asked quietly, taking a sip of warm herbal tea.
“She’s facing federal conspiracy and accessory charges,” Samuel replied evenly. “Her defense team is already trying to paint her as an unwitting pawn, but given that she participated in asset planning and actively harassed you in your own home while you were incapacitated, the prosecution is pushing for a minimum of five to ten years.”
I nodded slowly, looking out the panoramic glass window at the glittering city lights below.
“Let the courts decide,” I said. “I want every legal avenue pursued to its absolute limit. No pardons. No secret settlements.”

“Understood,” Samuel said, closing the binder. “By the way, your medical team called an hour ago. The heavy metal toxicology panel shows your system is already clearing the residual thallium thanks to the chelation therapy we started in secret three weeks ago. Give it another month, and you’ll be back to full strength.”
“I’m already stronger than they ever imagined,” I smiled.
