Chapter 10 - THE HORIZON OF LIGHT

Six months later, the high-altitude valley of San Pedro Garza García was bathed in the brilliant, golden-orange glow of an autumn sunset.

The air was crisp and clean, carrying the earthy scent of falling leaves and mountain pines.

On the private, stone-paved terrace of Alejandro Silva’s cliffside estate, a massive oak dining table was set for dinner. There were no flashing neon lights, no thumping basslines, no fake smiles from shallow sycophants, and no expensive, meaningless bottles of champagne designed to impress strangers.

Instead, the terrace was filled with the soft, acoustic melodies of a Spanish guitar, the gentle clinking of wine glasses, and the warm, genuine laughter of people who truly loved one another.

At the center of the table sat Dr. Armando Reséndiz, regaling the table with a deadpan medical joke that made Beatrice—Camila’s mother, who had finally moved out of her toxic suburban life to live safely with her daughter—burst into rich, musical laughter.

In the corner of the terrace, lounging comfortably in a high-end designer stroller, sat six-month-old Esteban. He had a shock of dark hair, sharp, intelligent eyes that looked remarkably like Alejandro’s, and a pair of chubby hands gripping a plastic rattle with fierce determination.

Camila stood near the stone balustrade, leaning against the wrought-iron railing, wearing a flowing emerald-green silk dress that caught the evening breeze.

She felt completely different than she had six months ago. The fragile, broken girl lying in a pool of blood on the marble floor of Mateo’s mansion was gone. In her place stood a woman of steel and light—a mother who had walked through the valley of the shadow of death and emerged invincible.

Footsteps approached softly behind her.

A moment later, a pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest.

Alejandro rested his chin on her shoulder, looking out across the breathtaking expanse of the valley where the lights of Monterrey were beginning to twinkle like a fallen constellation against the dusk.

“You’re quiet tonight,” Alejandro murmured, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the crook of her neck.

“I was just thinking about how fragile everything is,” Camila said softly, placing her hands over his, intertwining her fingers with his strong, calloused ones. “One second you’re living in a cage made of glass and lies... and the next, the whole thing shatters, and you find out what real air feels like.”

Alejandro tightened his arms around her, pulling her flush against his heart.

“You didn't break, Camila,” he whispered fiercely against her ear. “You broke the cage.”

Camila turned around within his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck, looking up into his dark, unyielding eyes. The man who had once been Mateo’s fiercest rival was now her anchor, her protector, and the keeper of her soul.

“We survived the night, Alejandro,” she smiled, a radiant, beautiful expression that lit up the entire terrace.

“And every night after this one belongs to us,” Alejandro answered.

Down on the terrace, baby Esteban let out a loud, happy gurgle, waving his rattle in the air as if signaling the start of a brand-new world.

And out there in the dark, cold streets of the city, miles away from the warmth of the terrace, a broken man sat alone in a run-down motel room, staring at a dead, blank screen—while overhead, the stars shone bright, eternal, and completely out of reach.
