Chapter 6 - THE AWAKENING IN THE CLOUDS

The interior of the AgustaWestland helicopter smelled sharply of betadine, sterile gauze, and iron.
The cabin had been hastily converted into an emergency trauma unit. The jump seats were folded back against the hull, and a portable surgical lighting rig hung from the ceiling reinforcement bars, casting a harsh, clinical white glare over the stretcher where Camila lay strapped down.
Dr. Reséndiz was working with terrifying, surgical precision. His forehead was slick with sweat as he made a swift, calculated incision across the lower abdomen, working under local anesthetic and massive IV pain blockers while his nurse assistant managed the fetal monitor.
“Scalpel. Suction. Clamp!” Reséndiz barked, his hands moving like lightning.
Alejandro sat on the narrow bench seat opposite the stretcher, his hands locked together between his knees, his knuckles bruised and stained with blood. His dark eyes never left Camila’s pale, lifeless face.
“Stay with me, Camila,” Alejandro muttered under his breath, his voice barely audible over the screaming turbine engines. “You survived the fall. You survived the wait. Do not give up now.”
“I’m entering the uterine cavity—stand by with the neonatal resuscitation unit!” Reséndiz shouted over the engine roar.
The seconds dragged on like hours. Outside the reinforced glass windows, the dark, sprawling lights of Monterrey’s luxury suburbs blurred beneath them as Soto pushed the helicopter toward the private helipad of San José Hospital at maximum velocity.
Then, a sound cut through the roar of the chopper.
A sharp, piercing, unmistakable cry.
Waaaaah! Waaaaah!
Dr. Reséndiz straightened up abruptly, holding a tiny, squirming, blood-slicked infant wrapped hastily in a sterile thermal blanket.
“It’s a boy!” Reséndiz announced, a breathless smile breaking across his exhausted face as he thrust the tiny bundle toward the neonatal nurse. “Clear the airway! Suction the mouth! Get him on oxygen—now!”
The tiny infant’s cries echoed through the cramped cabin—a fierce, angry, beautiful sound of life fighting its way out of the abyss.
Alejandro stood up slowly, his legs trembling slightly as he stared down at the tiny bundle of life swaddled in the nurse’s arms. A microscopic, vulnerable chest rising and falling in rapid, perfect rhythms.
On the stretcher, Camila’s eyelids fluttered.
A soft, shallow groan escaped her cracked lips. Her head rolled weakly to the side, her eyes struggling to focus against the blinding surgical lights of the cabin.
“Alejandro...?” she whispered, her voice a fragile, broken rasp.
Alejandro was kneeling beside her stretcher in a single second. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing the damp, dark hair away from her clammy forehead. His thumb traced her cheekbone with an infinite, heartbreaking tenderness.
“I’m here, Camila,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “You’re safe. The baby is safe. It’s a boy. He’s breathing.”
Tears spilled over Camila’s pale lashes, cutting clean tracks through the dried blood and dust on her cheeks. A weak, profoundly peaceful smile touched her lips.
“Mateo... did he... did he answer...?” she breathed, her consciousness fading back toward the edge of darkness.

Alejandro’s jaw hardened, his dark eyes flashing with a sudden, freezing contempt for the man who had abandoned her.
“No, Camila,” Alejandro said softly, his voice steady and cold as steel. “Mateo didn't answer. But you won’t ever have to call him again.”
