Chapter 9 - THE RECKONING IN THE PENTHOUSE

Three weeks later, the air inside Alejandro Silva’s sprawling penthouse overlooking the skyline of San Pedro Garza García smelled faintly of fresh-cut white lilies and warm vanilla.

The massive floor-to-ceiling windows welcomed the gentle afternoon breeze, filtering the harsh Monterrey sun into a soft, golden glow across the polished oak floors.

In the center of the living room, seated in a plush, cream-colored armchair, Camila held a tiny, swaddled bundle against her chest.

She looked transformed. The terrible bruises along her jawline had faded completely; the stark paleness of her skin had been replaced by a healthy, glowing warmth; and her dark eyes—once haunted by the silent, crushing loneliness of a gilded cage—now shone with a deep, fierce, unbreakable light.

Sleeping soundly against her heart was baby Mateo—though that name had already been quietly discarded, replaced simply by Esteban, a name chosen by Camila to signify a fresh, unblemished start.

The private elevator chime chimed softly.

Ding.

A moment later, the double doors slid open, and Alejandro walked into the penthouse. He had discarded his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to reveal strong, tanned forearms. He carried a small stack of legal documents in one hand and a baby bottle in the other.

He stopped when he saw her sitting by the window, the afternoon light framing her profile like a classical painting.

A gentle, genuine smile touched Alejandro’s lips—a smile that the ruthless business world of Monterrey never got to see.

“How is the little general doing today?” Alejandro asked softly, walking across the room and kneeling down beside Camila’s chair.

“He slept for four hours straight,” Camila whispered, a soft, musical laugh escaping her lips as she looked down at the tiny baby. “Dr. Reséndiz says he’s gaining weight faster than expected. He’s a fighter. Just like his mother.”

Alejandro’s dark eyes softened with an intensity that made Camila’s heart skip a beat. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently resting over her knuckles where they cradled the baby’s back.

“He gets that from both of us,” Alejandro murmured.

Camila looked up, meeting his gaze. There was no awkwardness left between them, no lingering ghosts of the past five years. The fire that had saved them both on that stormy midnight had burned away all the old resentments, leaving only a profound, unshakable bond forged in blood, survival, and fierce, protective loyalty.

“Have you heard anything about... him?” Camila asked quietly, her voice dropping just a fraction.

Alejandro’s expression hardened only slightly, the sharp edges of his corporate ruthlessness returning for a brief second before he smoothed them away for her.

“Mateo’s lawyers tried to file an emergency injunction last week contesting the asset forfeiture,” Alejandro said smoothly, setting the legal papers down on the coffee table. “They argued that the Apodaca industrial tender transfer was barred by the statute of limitations. The judge threw the case out in under ten minutes.”

“And where is he now?”

“Living in a cheap, run-down motel on the outskirts of Guadalupe,” Alejandro answered without a shred of pity. “Valeria packed her bags and left him the morning his bank accounts were frozen. His fair-weather friends won’t even return his phone calls. He spends his days drinking cheap tequila in a parking lot, trying to figure out how a man who had the whole world in his hands managed to lose it all in a single night.”

Camila looked down at baby Esteban, letting out a long, quiet breath. She didn't feel anger toward Mateo anymore. She didn't feel grief, or betrayal, or hatred. She only felt a profound, liberating emptiness where the pain used to live.

“He never understood what mattered,” Camila whispered, her voice steady and clear. “He thought power was something you bought with other people’s money. He thought love was just another accessory to show off at a VIP table.”

“He was a fool,” Alejandro said, his hand sliding up from her knuckles to cup her cheek tenderly, his thumb tracing the smooth skin of her face where the bruises used to be. “He traded a diamond for a reflection in a mirror.”

Camila leaned into his touch, her eyes closing for a fraction of a second as she absorbed the steady, unwavering warmth of his hand.

“And you?” she asked, opening her eyes to look directly into his dark, penetrating gaze. “What did you trade, Alejandro?”

May you like

Alejandro smiled—a slow, complete smile that reached all the way to his eyes, wiping away the last shadows of his own lonely past.

“Nothing,” he answered softly, leaning forward until his forehead rested gently against hers. “I just finally found what I was waiting for.”
