Chapter 3 - THE GHOST FROM THE PAST

Five years ago, Alejandro Silva had been Mateo’s shadow, his rock, and his undisputed brother-in-arms.

They had started together in the brutal, cutthroat world of northern Mexican real estate development—two hungry kids from working-class families in Monterrey who clawed their way up through sheer grit, smart land acquisitions, and a ruthless ambition that didn't care whose toes they stepped on. They shared an office, an apartment, bank accounts, and dreams of absolute empire.

Then came the betrayal.

It wasn't over a woman, though women had always been currency to Mateo. It was over a multi-million-dollar industrial park tender in Apodaca—a project Alejandro had spent eighteen months engineering from scratch. The night before the final contract signing, Mateo quietly went behind Alejandro’s back, doctored the corporate registry documents, cut Alejandro’s name out of the partnership shell, and signed the deal solely under his own name, pocketing the entirety of the initial fifty-million-peso advance.

When Alejandro confronted him, Mateo didn't apologize. He laughed in his face, told him he was too soft for the big leagues, and threatened to ruin him if he ever stepped foot near his offices again.

Alejandro didn't get ruined.

He got dangerous.

Using his technical brilliance and a razor-sharp instinct for market manipulation, Alejandro spent the next five years building an industrial logistics empire that quietly eclipsed Mateo’s flashy, debt-ridden real estate holdings. While Mateo bought sports cars and rented VIP tables to impress shallow influencers, Alejandro built a fortress of liquidity, tech infrastructure, and political influence that made him one of the most untouchable men in the state of Nuevo León.

Mateo’s hatred for Alejandro had grown into an all-consuming obsession. He hated Alejandro not because he had wronged him, but because Alejandro had succeeded without him—because Alejandro was wealthier, more respected, and possessed an aura of quiet, lethal authority that Mateo could never buy with all his flash.

Mateo had made it a house rule: If anyone ever mentions Alejandro Silva’s name in this house, they are out on the street.

And now, lying in a pool of her own blood on the floor of Mateo’s pretentious foyer, Camila’s trembling finger hovered over that forbidden name.

She didn't care about Mateo’s petty grudges. She didn't care about past feuds or corporate rivalries. She cared about one thing only: a heartbeat fading inside her belly.

With her last remaining ounce of strength, she pressed the call button.

Ring.

In a sprawling, minimalist penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of San Pedro Garza García, a sleek black smartphone resting on a marble nightstand vibrated violently.

Alejandro Silva did not sleep much. In the high-stakes world of international trade and supply chain security, emergencies happened at all hours. He was sitting at his mahogany desk in his home study, reviewing a encrypted data feed regarding a cargo shipment in Altamira, when the sound of the ringtone broke the quiet of the night.

He glanced at the caller ID.

His dark eyes narrowed instantly. A muscle ticked sharply along his square jawline.

Camila.

He hadn't spoken to her in five years. Not since the day Mateo threw him out of their shared office building. He knew Camila had married Mateo six months after the split—a marriage that Alejandro had always suspected was a strategic move by Mateo to legitimize his stolen wealth with a respectable family name, or perhaps just a cruel trophy to rub in Alejandro’s face.

Alejandro’s first instinct was to ignore it. It was 1:15 AM. It could be a trap, a drunken mistake, or a sick game concocted by Mateo to provoke him.

Yet, something in the stark urgency of the midnight call made his chest tighten.

He reached out and swiped the screen.

“Camila?” Alejandro’s voice was deep, sharp, instantly alert, carrying the quiet authority of a man accustomed to commanding crisis rooms. “Is everything okay? It’s the middle of the night.”

On the other end of the line, there was no immediate answer—only a terrifying, ragged wheeze, followed by a wet, choked sob that made Alejandro’s blood run cold.

“Alejandro...” her voice was a fragile, breaking whisper, barely audible over the static. “I... I fell... the stairs... there’s blood... please... please help me...”

Alejandro stood up so fast his heavy leather chair slammed backward against the wood paneling, crashing to the floor with a deafening thud.

“Camila?!” he barked, his calm facade shattering instantly, replaced by a raw, primal panic. “Where are you? Stay with me! Look at me—tell me where you are!”

“The... the house... Mateo... he won’t answer... the baby... it hurts so much, Alejandro...” Her voice faded into a weak, pathetic gasp.

“CAMILA!” Alejandro roared into the phone, his hands already flying across his desk to hit the master intercom button linked to his private security detail. “Stay with me! I’m coming right now! I’m bringing my medical team! Do not close your eyes! Talk to me, Camila! Please, keep talking!”

There was a soft, metallic clatter on the other end.

Then, total silence.

“Camila? CAMILA!”

Beep... beep... beep...

The line went dead.

Alejandro stared at the black screen of his phone for a single fraction of a second. His face was completely drained of color, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fury.

He didn't hesitate. He hit the speed dial on his encrypted comms unit.

“Soto. Get the emergency response team ready at the hangar. Right now,” Alejandro ordered, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold it could freeze fire. “Mobilize Dr. Reséndiz and his trauma unit. Fire up the chopper. We’re heading to the Garza estate on Avenida San Agustín.”

“Boss, it’s the middle of the night, we need flight clearance—” Soto began over the radio.

“I don’t give a damn about flight clearance!” Alejandro screamed, sprinting out of his study toward his private elevator, his chest heaving with adrenaline. “If air traffic control gives you any trouble, tell them Alejandro Silva is buying their airspace! If we aren’t airborne in three minutes, I’ll fire every last one of you! Move!”

The elevator doors slid open. Alejandro didn't wait for the car to level; he leaped inside, punching the subterranean garage button with a force that cracked the plastic panel.

Mateo had no idea what was coming.

While Mateo was drinking mezcal and laughing with a gold-digging airhead in a neon-lit club, the man he hated most in this world was descending upon his house like the angel of death—bringing with him doctors, power, and a vengeance that would dismantle Mateo’s entire universe piece by piece.
