Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDIT AND THE FROZEN ACCOUNTS

The secure line connected on the very first ring.
“This is Arthur Sterling,” a deep, authoritative voice answered instantly, professionalism dripping from every syllable. “Private legal counsel and senior trustee for the Sterling-Brooks Legacy Trust. State your authentication code, caller.”
“Seven-four-zero-nine-delta,” I said steadily, pressing a white handkerchief tighter against the cut on my forehead to stem the bleeding. “Good evening, Arthur. I trust I didn't wake you.”
There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. The formal, rigid posture of my chief legal advisor seemed to project right through the satellite connection.
“Mrs. Brooks? Good heavens, ma'am—your voice... are you alright? Is something wrong?” Arthur’s professional composure instantly fractured into genuine concern. “Where are you? Should I send a security detail?”
“I am fine, Arthur, though I have sustained a minor injury courtesy of my son and his wife,” I replied, my voice chillingly calm. “They have officially crossed a line from psychological abuse into physical assault and illegal property coercion.”
Silence fell over the secure line for a moment, heavy and vibrating with restrained fury. Arthur Sterling had managed our family assets for over thirty years; he had known Ethan since he was a toddler and watched him grow into an arrogant, entitled corporate executive. Arthur had warned me years ago that keeping Ethan in the dark about our true wealth would breed resentment, but I had insisted on the test.
Now, the experiment was over. The results were absolute.
“Name your instructions, Mrs. Brooks,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register. “Do we initiate immediate criminal charges for assault?”
“Not yet,” I said, walking over to the small antique desk and turning on the brass lamp. I looked at my reflection in the vanity mirror—the cut above my brow was already swelling, turning a dark, ugly purple, framed by dried blood staining my cheek. The visual confirmation only hardened my resolve. “I want something much more thorough. I want a total financial freeze. Every single corporate account, personal checking ledger, credit line, investment portfolio, and real estate holding linked to Ethan’s name or his company, Brooks Enterprises, is to be locked down immediately.”
“Done,” Arthur replied without a single second of hesitation. “As the sole settlor, primary trustee, and ultimate beneficiary of the twenty-one-million-dollar master trust holding all underlying equity for Brooks Enterprises, you possess absolute unilateral authority to freeze, reassign, or liquidate every asset under our corporate umbrella. Ethan is merely a salaried proxy CEO holding a fractional, non-voting equity stake subject to your explicit consent.”
“He thinks he owns the world, Arthur,” I murmured, looking out the cottage window toward the sprawling, brightly lit mansion where my son and his wife were likely celebrating their perceived victory. “By morning, I want him to wake up and discover that his entire financial universe has vanished into thin air. I want his credit cards declined, his corporate accounts locked, and his digital empire reduced to absolute zero.”
“It will be executed before dawn,” Arthur assured me. “Furthermore, I am dispatching two private investigators and a medical documentation team to your location right now to secure forensic evidence of your assault. We will document the broken glass, your injuries, and the property damage. When we drop the hammer, Ethan won't just be broke—he’ll be facing felony charges.”
“Thank you, Arthur. Call me when the freeze is complete.”

I ended the call, placed the black satellite phone back into the safe, and locked the floorboards.
I didn't sleep that night. Instead, I sat in the worn armchair by the window, watching the moonlight shift across the lawn, listening to the distant hum of the estate’s automated security systems, and mentally preparing for the storm that was about to break.
