Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE HOUSE OF CARDS

The handcuffs clicked around Ethan’s wrists with a sharp, metallic ring that sounded entirely too loud in the quiet morning air of the guest cottage.

For thirty-five years, Ethan Brooks had lived under the comfortable, protective shadow of generational wealth, never once having to truly worry about what it meant to earn a meal, a roof, or a reputation. He had spent the last three years treating his own mother like an inconvenient, penniless charity case, entirely oblivious to the fact that every single luxury he flaunted—the imported suits, the sports cars, the multi-million-dollar estate, and his position as CEO—was nothing more than an illusion rented out on his mother’s terms.

"You can't do this!" Ethan shrieked, twisting his wrists as the state investigator firmly guided him toward the doorway. "I’m the head of Brooks Enterprises! I have a board meeting at ten o'clock! This is a corporate hostile takeover—Mother, tell them to stop this insanity!"

I didn't turn around. I stood by the small wooden table, my fingers resting lightly on the surface where my teacup still sat, watching the golden sunlight hit the polished floorboards.

"You are no longer the head of anything, Ethan," Arthur Sterling said, his voice dripping with icy corporate disdain. "As of four this morning, the board of directors has received emergency documentation from the Sterling-Brooks Legacy Trust revoking your proxy status. Your corporate email has been deactivated, your security badges have been blacklisted, and an interim management team appointed by Mrs. Brooks is currently securing the downtown headquarters."

Vanessa was still huddled on the floor in a heap of designer sportswear, sobbing uncontrollably, her face buried in her hands. The reality that her credit cards were dead, her social standing was evaporating, and her luxury lifestyle was officially gone had finally shattered her composure entirely.

"Evelyn... please," she choked out, looking up at me with red, tear-streaked eyes. "Think of the scandal! What will the neighbors say? What will the country club members think when they see Ethan being led away by police?"

"They will think what they always think when an arrogant fraud gets caught," I replied quietly, looking down at her without an ounce of pity. "They will whisper behind closed doors for a week, and then they will move on to the next tragedy. Just like you moved on when you decided I was no longer useful to your social ambitions."

The police officers didn't wait for Vanessa to recover. They escorted Ethan out across the lawn, past the shattered glass terrace where he had thrown me the night before, and pushed him into the back of an unmarked cruiser.

As the vehicle’s engine revved and it rolled down the long gravel driveway, I walked over to the cottage window and watched it disappear around the bend.

The silence that followed was heavy, absolute, and profoundly sweet.
