Chapter 7 - THE EVICTION AND THE RECOVERY

Back at the Oakridge Heights estate, the afternoon sun brought no warmth to the main house.

Vanessa had managed to drag herself back inside the mansion, but her temporary refuge was short-lived. By two o'clock in the afternoon, a moving truck rolled down the driveway, stopping right in front of the grand double doors.

Three men in blue uniforms stepped out, accompanied by a court bailiff and a representative from the Sterling-Brooks Legacy Trust.

Vanessa rushed to the front door, pulling it open with a look of frantic, tearful defiance. "What is the meaning of this?! You can't just show up here! This is our home!"

"This is property of the Sterling-Brooks Master Trust, Mrs. Brooks," the trust representative stated coldly, handing her a formal notice of eviction and asset repossession. "You have exactly two hours to gather your personal clothing, cosmetics, and non-monetary personal effects. All designer jewelry, luxury vehicles, artwork, and high-end electronics purchased with corporate or trust funds remain on the premises as recovered assets."

"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking into hysterical desperation. "I'm a Brooks! I have rights! I'll call my lawyer—I'll call the press—!"

"Your credit cards are canceled, your legal retainer accounts have been frozen by court order, and no attorney in the state will touch your case without a five-figure cash retainer up front," the bailiff said flatly. "Start packing, ma'am. The clock is ticking."

For the next two hours, the woman who had spent three years sneering at me, treating me like an uneducated servant in my own home, was forced to pack her designer wardrobe into cheap cardboard boxes under the watchful eye of a court bailiff.

I watched from the window of the guest cottage, sipping another cup of tea.

There was no joy in my heart—only a deep, heavy exhaustion. Winning an empire back from your own flesh and blood is a hollow victory. It proves that money can buy security, pay lawyers, and lock doors, but it cannot buy a son who loves you for who you are rather than what you can give him.

By sunset, the luxury vehicles in the driveway were towed away, the moving truck departed with their meager remaining belongings, and the sprawling multi-million-dollar mansion fell completely, eerily quiet.

Vanessa and Ethan were homeless, broke, and facing criminal charges, cast out into the very world they thought they were too good for.
