Chapter 4 - The Empire of Shadows

Mabel stared at him, her mind spinning out of control. This wasn't just a wealthy man; this was Damian Vance—the phantom king of Chicago’s vast financial and underground syndicates, a name spoken only in hushed, terrified whispers across the Midwest.
“You can’t do that,” Mabel whispered, horrified. “Ruining people over a petty sidewalk argument? That’s tyrannical!”
Damian’s dark eyes narrowed slightly, though a strange, appreciative warmth flickered in their depths. “In my world, loyalty and kindness are the only currencies that hold true value. Cruelty has a price, Mabel. And those who disrespected you are going to pay it in full.”
Before Mabel could process the terrifying scale of his retribution, Damian raised his hand, and Marcus—his senior advisor—stepped forward, holding out a thick leather-bound folder.
“You’ve spent the last six years breaking your back in restaurant basements to pay off your late brother’s medical debts,” Damian said quietly, reading from the file without opening it. “You’ve worked sixteen-hour shifts, denied yourself basic comforts, and lived in a cramped studio apartment with a leaking roof. That ends today.”
“I don’t want your charity, Mr. Vance,” Mabel said firmly, stepping back, her pride flaring up despite the fear clutching at her heart. “I gave you bread because you were hungry. I didn't do it expecting a payoff!”
Damian let out a low, dark chuckle—a sound of genuine respect.
“It’s not charity, Mabel. It’s an investment,” Damian corrected, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from him. “Your brother’s debts are already cleared—they vanished this morning. Furthermore, Le Ciel is now under new management. Your management. You own this building now. You can run it, burn it down, or turn it into a flower shop. The choice is entirely yours.”

Mabel shook her head violently, tears stinging her eyes. “I can’t accept this! This is insane!”
“You can, and you will,” Damian murmured, his voice dropping to a hypnotic register. “Because whether you want it or not, the moment you handed me that loaf of rosemary bread under the gold awning, you tied your fate to mine. You protected the city's most feared predator. Now, you have to live with the consequences of having a king at your back.”
