Chapter 6 - The Invitation

A week after the takeover, the restaurant was closed to the public for a private event.

The grand dining room of Le Ciel had been transformed. Instead of cold, pretentious austerity, the tables were adorned with fresh candles, soft lighting, and warm, inviting floral arrangements.

Mabel stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the glittering skyline of Chicago as dusk settled over the city. The heavy weight of her past struggles—the constant dread of debt collectors, the blistered hands, the endless exhaustion—had been lifted, replaced by a strange, uncharted future.

The heavy oak doors opened behind her.

Footsteps echoed softly across the polished parquet floor. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Damian walked up beside her, holding two crystal glasses filled with deep red wine. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing briefly against hers.

“The city is quiet tonight,” Damian noted, gazing out at the horizon.

“It’s too quiet,” Mabel countered, taking a small sip of the wine. She turned to face him, her dark eyes searching his sharp features. “You dismantled an entire social circle just because three women laughed at me. Do you realize how terrifying that is?”

Damian turned to her, his expression softening into something devastatingly human. He set his glass down on the windowsill.

“In my world, people only act out of malice when they think there are no consequences,” Damian said softly. “For thirty years, I was surrounded by wolves who only understood violence and leverage. Then I sat on a dirty sidewalk in a torn coat, and a woman who had every reason to ignore me gave me her last loaf of bread.”

He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Mabel could feel the steady, reassuring rhythm of his breathing.

“You didn't know who I was, Mabel. You didn't care about my money, my power, or my name,” Damian continued, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. “You protected a stranger because it was the right thing to do. That is a rare kind of light in a very dark city. And I intend to spend the rest of my life making sure nobody ever dims it.”

Mabel’s breath caught. She looked up into his dark, searching eyes, seeing past the armor of the mafia king down to the wounded, resilient man beneath.

“And if I tell you that you’re entirely reckless?” Mabel whispered, a faint, teasing smile touching the corners of her lips.

Damian’s mouth curved into a slow, genuine smile—a rare expression that transformed his harsh features entirely.

“Then I’ll spend every day proving to you that I’m worth the risk.”
