Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Midnight settled over the Moretti estate, quiet and peaceful.

The last of the guests had departed, and the fairy lights in the courtyard had dimmed to a soft, ambient glow. Inside the master suite on the second wing, the French doors stood open, letting in the cool, crisp autumn breeze.

Sophia stood by the balcony railing, wrapped in a plush silk shawl, looking out over the sprawling lawns and the distant lights of the harbor where their ships sailed under legal, untainted flags.

Behind her, strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti,” Lorenzo whispered against her hair, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple.

Sophia leaned back, resting her head comfortably against his shoulder. “I was just thinking about how strange life is. Eleven months ago, I was invisible. I thought my entire existence was just scrubbing floors and praying nobody noticed my daughter and me.”

“They were blind fools,” Lorenzo said fiercely, tightening his grip. “You were never invisible, Sophia. I noticed you from the very first day you walked through those gates.”

Sophia turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck and looking up into his face with a playful smile. “Is that so? And why didn't you say anything sooner?”

“Because I was too proud, too arrogant, and too blind to realize that the most important person in this estate was the one holding the keys to its heart all along,” Lorenzo answered honestly, kissing the tip of her nose.

Down the hallway, a sleepy yawn echoed from the doorway of the adjoining nursery.

A moment later, little Lena appeared in the bedroom threshold, rubbing her eyes with both fists, dragging her stuffed rabbit behind her.

“Mommy? Daddy? Can I sleep in your room tonight? I had a dream about pancakes.”

Sophia and Lorenzo exchanged a warm, knowing glance.

Lorenzo reached out his free hand, waving the little girl over. “Come here, troublemaker.”

Lena squealed happily, running across the hardwood floor and launching herself onto the edge of the large bed. Lorenzo scooped her up easily, lifting her high into the air before pulling her down between them in a warm, protective sandwich of blankets and laughter.

Sophia snuggled against Lorenzo’s side, her hand resting over his heart, while little Lena curled up safely on his chest, her steady, peaceful breathing filling the quiet room.

The conspiracy was broken. The enemies were locked away. The past was buried beneath the golden earth.

And as the autumn stars shone down on the Moretti manor, Sophia knew with absolute certainty that no one would ever be invisible here again.
