Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the Past

The morning sun over the Moretti estate did not feel like a renewal; it felt like an autopsy.

By nine o’clock, the federal investigators had cordoned off the west wing, sealing Valentina’s private suite with yellow crime-scene tape that snapped softly in the crisp morning breeze. Armored vans from the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission lined the gravel drive, their tires crushing the white roses Lorenzo had dropped the evening before.

Inside the grand study, the air smelled of stale coffee and burnt toner.

Lorenzo sat behind the massive mahogany desk, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his tie discarded on the floor. He hadn't slept. His eyes were bloodshot, fixed on a certified audit report that revealed the true extent of the financial bleeding. Over eighty million dollars had been siphoned through shell companies managed by Valentina’s father and routed directly to offshore accounts controlled by the syndicate.

A sharp knock broke the silence.

The heavy oak door pushed open, and Chief Security Officer Miller stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder.

“We finished sweeping the perimeter and the lower docks, Mr. Moretti,” Miller said, his voice flat and professional. “All encrypted comm-links used by Vance’s strike team have been traced to a relay server in Zurich. The proxy points back to a holding corporation owned by the Ashford family trust.”

Lorenzo didn't look up from the audit report. “Are they moving the assets?”

“We froze everything forty minutes ago via emergency federal injunction,” Miller replied, placing the folder on the desk. “The accounts are locked. But Mr. Moretti… there’s something else. We decrypted the hard drive recovered from Vance’s tactical vest. It contains internal security logs from your father’s final months.”

Lorenzo’s hand froze over the desk. He looked up slowly. “What kind of logs?”

“Medical records. And correspondence between your father and his private physician.” Miller hesitated, his eyes dropping to the carpet. “Your father didn't die of natural heart failure, sir. The autopsy report was altered. He was suffering from rapid-onset heavy metal toxicity. Someone was poisoning him slowly, day by day, to force the signature on the Ashford merger.”

The temperature in the study seemed to drop twenty degrees.

Lorenzo stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward against the wainscoting. The realization hit him like a physical blow—cold, sharp, and absolute.

Valentina hadn't just stolen an empire. She had murdered his father.

“Where is she?” Lorenzo’s voice dropped into a terrifying, lethal whisper.

“Federal holding facility downtown,” Miller said. “She’s being arraigned at two o’clock this afternoon.”

Lorenzo grabbed his suit jacket from the back of the chair, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “Get the car ready. We’re going to court.”
