Chapter 7 - The Arraignment

The federal courthouse downtown was surrounded by a dense mob of reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers, all shoving microphones toward the marble steps as black SUV fleets arrived.
Lorenzo stepped out of his town car, shielded by two federal marshals and Chief Miller. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding granite.
Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Valentina Ricci sat at the defense table, flanked by two high-priced corporate attorneys from a prominent downtown firm. She wore an orange jumpsuit instead of her usual designer silk, her hair pulled back into a tight, unstyled knot. Yet, even behind the glass partition and the heavy legal restrictions, her eyes retained their clinical, venomous glare.
When the federal judge entered the chamber, the court clerk read the formal charges aloud:
“Case number 2026-CR-8849: United States versus Valentina Ricci. Charges include corporate espionage, financial wire fraud, international money laundering, conspiracy to commit child trafficking, and premeditated poisoning resulting in homicide.”
At the final word—homicide—a collective gasp echoed through the gallery.
Valentina’s defense attorney immediately stood up, objecting strenuously. “Your Honor, the charge of homicide is an absurd, inflammatory fabrication unsupported by primary toxicological evidence—”
“The toxicological evidence was recovered from the private vault of Cole-Moretti holdings this morning, Your Honor,” a calm, resonant voice interrupted from the center aisle.
The courtroom turned its head.
Lorenzo stood up from the front row, holding a sealed federal coroner’s addendum bearing the signature of the Chief State Pathologist. He walked slowly toward the prosecution’s podium, his amber eyes locked directly onto Valentina across the room.
“The decedent, my father, Arthur Moretti, ingested cumulative doses of heavy metal compounds over a six-month period coinciding precisely with the finalization of the Ashford merger agreement,” Lorenzo stated, his voice ringing with cold, absolute authority. “Financial records recovered from the defendant’s personal ledger prove that she personally wired contingency payments to the attending physician who altered the initial death certificate.”
Valentina’s attorneys turned to stare at their client in horror, realizing they had been kept completely in the dark regarding the true scale of her criminal enterprise.
Valentina slowly turned her head. For the first time since her arrest, the pristine, untouchable facade completely fractured. Her lips parted, her breath hitching as she met Lorenzo’s terrifying gaze.
“You can’t prove I signed those transfers,” Valentina hissed, her voice cracking as she leaned toward the microphone.
“Every wire, every message, every encrypted file has already been decrypted and authenticated by federal cyber-analysts,” Lorenzo said quietly, stepping closer to the partition. “Your father’s empire is crumbling. Your co-conspirators are singing. And you will spend the rest of your natural life behind concrete walls where you can never hurt a child again.”
The judge slammed his gavel down once, the sharp crack echoing through the silent room.
“Bail is denied. The defendant is remanded to federal custody without the possibility of release pending trial. Court is adjourned.”
As the bailiffs stepped forward to snap heavy steel cuffs around Valentina’s wrists and lead her away through the side exit, she cast one final, venomous look back at Lorenzo.

It was a look of pure hatred. But Lorenzo didn't flinch, did
n't blink, and didn't look away. He watched her disappear behind the heavy steel doors, knowing the nightmare was finally, irreversibly over.
