Chapter 4 - The Phantom Flight

The rain that had threatened all afternoon finally broke over Westchester as twilight settled, turning the sky an bruised, ink-black purple. Lightning flashed intermittently across the horizon, casting jagged, strobe-like reflections through the tall gothic windows of the Ventresca estate.
Inside the subterranean server room, the air felt suddenly thick, charged with an invisible, devastating electricity.
Nora stared at the tracking monitor, her mind racing through the terrifying implications of Toby’s discovery. Luca Ventresca was not due back until Friday. The entire household—from the kitchen staff to the high-ranking security details—was operating under the strict assumption that the boss was half a world away, knee-deep in international trade negotiations.
Which meant no one had prepared for his return. Which meant the security convoy idling at the private airstrip was operating on a delayed schedule. Which meant Luca was arriving quietly, unannounced, stepping straight into a house where his fiancée was actively waging a silent, treasonous war against his mother.
“Does Moretti know?” Nora asked, her voice tight with tension.
“Negative,” Toby replied, tapping rapidly on his console to route the encrypted telemetry feed directly to his private tablet. “Luca’s flight plan was filed under a phantom tactical call-sign—standard protocol whenever he wants to bypass local port authorities and conduct unscheduled internal security sweeps. He didn't notify the Manhattan office, and he certainly didn't notify Moretti.”
Toby spun his chair around to face Nora, his hazel eyes wide behind his glasses. “Nora, you understand what this means, don't you? Luca is walking straight into a trap. Not a physical trap—a psychological one. He thinks he’s returning to a peaceful home where his mother is being cared for and his bride-to-be is putting the finishing touches on the wedding of the century.”
“And instead,” Nora continued, her voice grim, “he’s going to walk in and find his mother nursing a bruised cheek, a forged corporate takeover document sitting in his private study, and a fiancée who believes she has successfully usurped his family’s legacy behind his back.”
“We have to warn Elena,” Nora said, turning toward the elevator doors. “We need to get upstairs before Luca’s car clears the main security gates.”
“Wait,” Toby hissed, grabbing her wrist. “If you go running up there now, Celeste will see you. She’s paranoid; she’s stationed her own personal security detail—two guys she brought in from her family’s estate in Newport—outside the second-floor landing. Moretti hasn't cleared them, but Celeste pulled rank using the wedding preparations as an excuse.”
Nora pulled her arm back gently. “Toby, Elena’s medication is still in Celeste’s pocket. If that old woman doesn't get her heart pill by six o'clock, the stress of this confrontation could trigger a cardiac event before Luca even sets foot in the foyer.”
Before Toby could argue further, the red emergency indicator light above the server room door flashed once, accompanied by a soft, melodic chime from the main security console.
MAIN GATE IDENTIFICATION: VEHICLE ARRIVAL. ENCRYPTED TRANSPONDER RECOGNIZED. PASSENGER: VENTRESCA, L.

Toby stared at the screen. The time stamp read: 18:14.
Luca Ventresca had just cleared the iron gates. He was less than three minutes away from the front steps.
