Chapter 8 - The True Heir of the House

With Celeste gone, the suffocating tension in the grand foyer slowly dissipated, replaced by a heavy, somber quiet.
Luca turned back to his mother’s wheelchair, dropping immediately back to one knee. He reached out, taking Elena’s fragile, trembling hand in his large, warm palm, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles.
“I’m sorry, Mother,” Luca murmured, his voice cracking slightly with a vulnerability he never showed to the outside world. “I should have never left you unprotected, even for two days.”
Elena managed a faint, tired smile, squeezing his fingers with surprising strength. “You have too many wars to fight outside these walls, my son. But you chose your security well today.”
Luca raised his head, his dark eyes scanning the perimeter of the foyer until they locked onto a figure standing quietly near the service archway.
Nora had remained frozen in the background throughout the entire confrontation, clutching her gray apron, praying she could slip back downstairs before anyone noticed her presence.
“Nora,” Luca called out.
Nora swallowed hard, stepped out from the shadow of the archway, and lowered her head respectfully. “Mr. Ventresca. Welcome home.”
Luca stood up, towering over the foyer as he walked slowly toward her. Every instinct told Nora to step back, but she held her ground, meeting his gaze with the same quiet dignity she had shown upstairs in the sitting room.
“Toby transmitted the server room logs to my phone while Sterling was playing the audio,” Luca said, stopping three feet away from her. His face was unreadable, carved from the same hard granite as his mother’s. “He told me you were the one who witnessed the assault. He told me you were the one who forced the issue down to the tech bunker before it was too late.”
“I only did what any staff member with a conscience would do, Mr. Ventresca,” Nora said steadily. “Elena is the heart of this house. We don't protect the furniture; we protect the people who built it.”
Luca stared at her for a long, intense moment. Then, very slowly, a faint, genuine respect touched the corners of his mouth—a rare expression that humanized the most feared man in New York.
“My mother needs her medication,” Luca said quietly. “And I need my private study swept for bugs, wiretaps, and forged documents. Moretti is getting old; he misses things. As of tonight, I am promoting you to Chief of Household Operations.”
Nora’s eyes widened slightly in genuine shock. “Mr. Ventresca... I’m a housekeeper. I don't run corporate logistics—”
“You managed a crisis involving an armed intruder, a corporate fraud, and a medical emergency without dropping your tray or losing your nerve,” Luca interrupted, his voice absolute. “That is the exact definition of logistics. Moretti will brief you on your new responsibilities in the morning.”

He turned back toward his mother’s wheelchair, offering his arm to wheel her into the private dining room.
As they walked away, Elena cast one final, warm glance back over her shoulder at Nora, nodding in silent approval.
