Chapter 7 - The Confession of a Fraud

Celeste dropped to her knees on the marble floor.
The silk of her designer dress pooled around her like a puddle of spilled water. All the arrogance, all the high-society posturing, all the cold ambition evaporated in an instant, replaced by a primal, animalistic terror. She reached out with trembling, manicured fingers, clawing weakly at the hem of Luca’s dark trousers.
“Luca... please... I’m sorry,” she wept, heavy mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks. “It was my father—he pushed me into it! The family debts, they were going to repossess the Newport estate, the creditors were closing in—he said if I married you, I had to secure the voting blocks, or he would—he would ruin me—”
Luca looked down at her the way a surgeon might look at a cancerous tumor before discarding it into a biohazard bin. He didn't pull his leg away, nor did he offer her the smallest shred of comfort.
“Your father’s shipping lines in Providence were bought out by my shell company eighteen months ago, Celeste,” Luca said, his voice chillingly polite. “If he needed liquidity, all he had to do was ask me. Instead, he chose to send a grifter into my home to poison my mother and steal my empire.”
Celeste looked up, her eyes wide with sheer horror. “You... you knew about my family’s debt?”
“I know the blood type of every man who works your father’s docks, Celeste,” Luca replied quietly. “Did you really think I would choose a wife without auditing every square inch of her existence? I knew about the debts. I was waiting to see if you had the character to stand beside me through a storm, or if you were just another parasite waiting for an inheritance.”
He reached down, gripping her by the silk collar of her blouse with one hand, lifting her effortlessly off her knees until her face was inches from his.
“You failed the audit,” Luca whispered.
He let go of her abruptly, sending her sprawling backward against the base of the mahogany stairs.
“Sterling,” Luca commanded, not breaking eye contact with the floor.
“Boss,” Sterling stepped forward instantly.
“Escort Miss Beaumont to the perimeter gates. Leave her luggage on the gravel outside. Inform her father that his remaining commercial licenses in the Port of New York are officially revoked, effective immediately. If I ever see her face within fifty miles of this estate again, she won't need to worry about her family’s debts, because she’ll be spending the rest of her natural life testifying before a federal grand jury.”
Celeste let out a choked, ragged sob, realizing that her life, her social standing, and her family’s entire empire had just been erased in less than three minutes. Two security guards appeared silently from the shadows of the hallway, lifted her by her arms, and dragged her toward the heavy front doors as she wept hysterically into the cold night air.

The doors slammed shut. The latch clicked.
The house fell silent once more.
