Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The snow began to fall gently outside the large glass windows of Bellini’s, dusting the bustling downtown street with a pristine, glittering white blanket.
Inside, the restaurant hummed with the warm, cheerful chatter of diners enjoying the winter evening, entirely unaware of the dark, violent history that had once threatened to tear the city’s underworld apart.
Cara walked behind the service bar, reviewing the evening reservations list on her tablet. Her life as a struggling waitress working paycheck to paycheck in constant fear of eviction was gone forever. In its place stood an empire of her own making—built not on blood and fear, but on courage, resilience, and an unbreakable partnership that had been forged in the dark depths of a mountain ravine.
The heavy front glass door chimed softly, letting in a swirl of crisp winter air.
Dante walked in, shaking the light snowflakes from the shoulders of his tailored wool coat. He didn't head for the back VIP booths. He walked straight toward the main bar, his slate-grey eyes locking instantly onto her through the polished glassware.
He didn't say a word. He simply reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a small, velvet-wrapped box, and slid it across the marble counter toward her.
Cara raised an eyebrow, looking down at the box before looking back up at him with a skeptical smile.
“What’s this?” she asked. “More corporate restructuring?”
“Open it and find out,” Dante replied smoothly, leaning against the counter.
Cara picked up the small box, unlatched the velvet lid, and paused.
Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a rare, deep grey diamond flanked by two brilliant white sapphires—a design as unique, sharp, and breathtaking as the woman who wore it.
She looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat despite everything they had survived together.
“Dante...” she murmured.
“You saved my life when everyone else would have walked away, Cara,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a soft, absolute sincerity that stripped away every layer of the mafia boss, leaving only a man completely devoted to the woman standing before him. “You stared down my enemies, outsmarted my traitors, and showed me what real strength looks like. I spent thirty-eight years building an empire out of fear. But I want to spend the rest of my life building something real with you.”
Cara stared at the ring, a profound wave of peace and fierce, unshakeable joy washing over her. She picked up the ring, slipped it onto her left ring finger, where it fit with absolute perfection, and looked straight into his eyes.
“Well, Mr. Moretti,” Cara smiled, stepping around the counter to stand right beside him. “I suppose that means I’m officially promoted from waitress to partner for life.”

Dante pulled her close against his chest, wrapping his arms around her with an effortless, protective warmth as the snow fell softly outside the window.
“For eternity, Cara,” he whispered against her hair. “For eternity.”
