Chapter 7 - The Inner Sanctum

Back at the Moretti estate, dawn broke over the sprawling stone courtyards, painting the sky in pale shades of bruised purple and slate grey.

Cara stood by the tall, arched window of the third-floor master guest suite, looking out over the manicured gardens and the heavily armed security checkpoints ringing the perimeter wall. She wore a comfortable, oversized cashmere sweater and soft wool trousers provided by the estate staff—clothes that cost more than six months of her apartment rent combined.

There was a soft knock at the heavy oak door.

“Come in,” she called out.

The door pushed open, and Dante entered. He had already been up for hours; his suit was immaculate, his hair neatly combed, and his posture radiated the absolute, terrifying command of a crime lord who had just spent the night routing his enemies through encrypted phone lines and secret bank audits.

“Did you sleep?” Dante asked, walking over to stand a few feet away from her by the window.

“Not really,” Cara admitted, turning to face him. “Every time I close my eyes, I hear that car hitting the guardrail.”

Dante nodded slowly, his expression softening by a fraction—a rare, human crack in his otherwise impenetrable armor. “Adrenaline does that. It takes a few days for the system to realize it isn’t fighting for its life anymore.” ☕

“Your men?” Cara asked. “Did they find out who cut the brakes?”

A dark, dangerous shadow passed over Dante’s slate-grey eyes.

“My tech team decrypted Julian’s private offshore communications ledger at four this morning,” Dante said coldly. “Not only did he and Vanessa orchestrate the brake sabotage, but over the past three years, they’ve systematically embezzled forty-two million dollars from my legitimate real estate holding accounts, planning to pin the federal tax evasion charges on me before staging my accidental death.”

Cara let out a low whistle. “Talk about a hostile takeover.”

Dante let out a short, humorless bark of laughter. “Indeed. But my wife and my trusted CFO made one critical miscalculation.”

“What’s that?”

“They assumed I was already dead,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. “And they underestimated the waitress who was listening behind the mahogany partition.”

He turned his gaze fully onto Cara, studying her with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“My men intercepted an encrypted data ping originating from Julian’s penthouse twenty minutes ago,” Dante continued. “They’re looking for you, Cara. They ran the license plate of your hatchback through the municipal traffic cameras parked outside Bellini’s last night. They know who you are, where your apartment is, and that you followed me up the mountain.”

The cold reality of her situation hit Cara like a physical blow. Her apartment—her books, her clothes, her entire normal life—was now a painted target.

“Then I can’t go back,” she whispered.

“You were never going back,” Dante replied smoothly. “Your apartment was searched by four armed men wearing ski masks thirty minutes after sunrise. The landlord called me to report a break-in. Fortunately, you were already miles away.”

Cara stared at him, a shiver running down her spine. “They’re going to keep coming, aren’t they?”

“Yes,” Dante said, stepping closer to her, his presence warm, commanding, and absolute. “Which is why you are going to stay right here, under my roof, protected by the most heavily armed men in the city. And in return... I am going to offer you a proposition.”

Cara raised an eyebrow. “A proposition? From a mafia boss? That sounds ominous.”

Dante smiled—a genuine, sharp, incredibly handsome smile that completely transformed his face.

“It’s simple,” Dante said, holding out his hand. “You saved my empire from crashing into a river. I am going to give you the resources, the protection, and the opportunity to help me dismantle the traitors who tried to kill us both. Are you in, Miss Fields?”

Cara looked down at his outstretched hand—calloused, strong, carrying the weight of a violent underworld, yet offering her absolute safety and a chance at striking back.

She placed her hand firmly in his, sealing the alliance.

“Show me what we do first, Mr. Moretti.”
