Chapter 4 - The Circle of Black SUVs

For several agonizing seconds, neither of them spoke.

They lay tangled in the mud halfway down the cliffside, chest heaving, listening to the rain drumming against the leaves and the distant, violent rush of the river far below. Dante’s head rested against the damp earth just inches from Cara’s shoulder, his breathing heavy and ragged.

Then, high above them on the mountain road, the heavy, rhythmic thrum of powerful diesel engines cut through the storm.

Bright beams of high-intensity LED headlights suddenly flooded the cliffside, turning the dark rainy night into a glaring white stage.

Vroom.

More engines roared to life. Tires crunched over gravel and broken glass.

Within seconds, a dozen sleek, matte-black Cadillac Escalades formed a protective, heavily armored semi-circle along the edge of the broken guardrail. The doors flew open in unison.

Dozens of heavy-set men in dark tactical suits and overcoats poured out of the vehicles, their movements disciplined, military-precise, and deadly. They swarmed the guardrail with flashlights and drawn weapons.

One of the men—a hulking brute with a jagged scar across his jaw named Vince—shone a high-powered tactical flashlight straight down the ravine, locking the beam directly onto the two figures lying in the mud.

“Boss!” Vince roared into his radio communicator, his voice echoing across the gorge. “We got movement down the embankment! The car is gone, but I see movement!”

Before Cara could even draw a breath, three armed men scrambled over the broken guardrail, sliding down the muddy slope with terrifying speed.

Within seconds, three black barrels of suppressed submachine guns were pointed squarely at Cara’s head.

“Hold your fire!” a sharp, authoritative voice commanded from above.

Dante Moretti pushed himself up from the mud. Despite the blood caked across his forehead, his torn suit, and the severe limp in his left leg, the sheer, crushing aura of absolute authority radiated from him instantly. He didn't look like a man who had just survived a fatal crash; he looked like a king reclaiming his throne from the ashes.

The armed enforcers froze instantly, lowering their weapons by a fraction of an inch, looking down at their boss in stunned disbelief.

Vince slid down the embankment, skidding to a halt beside them, his eyes wide. “Boss... we thought... the sensors indicated a total drop. Are you—”

“I’m alive, Vince,” Dante interrupted, his voice deep, cold, and smooth as polished marble. He turned his head slowly, his piercing grey eyes shifting away from his chief enforcer and locking directly onto Cara Fields.

Cara was shivering violently, her hands covered in his blood, her clothes soaked through to the skin, sitting helplessly in the mud between the cliff and the most feared man on the East Coast.

Dante reached out slowly, his large, calloused hand wrapping around her trembling wrist with a firm, inescapable grip.

Every single armed enforcer on the hillside tensed, their fingers tightening on their triggers, waiting for a single word from their boss.

Dante looked down at her through the driving rain, his expression unreadable, masking a storm of dangerous calculations.

“Now tell me, waitress,” Dante whispered, his voice turning terrifyingly calm as the rain washed the blood from his brow. “How the hell did you know my brakes were going to fail?”
