Chapter 8 - The Trap is Sprung

Two nights later, inside the private VIP lounge of an exclusive downtown supper club owned by the Moretti syndicate, Julian Vance sat swirling a glass of scotch, checking his gold watch every thirty seconds.

Across the mahogany table sat Vanessa Moretti, her fingers drumming nervously against her glass.

“He hasn't answered my calls in forty-eight hours,” Vanessa hissed, her voice laced with rising panic. “And the corporate accounts haven’t transferred the final liquidation tranche. Julian, tell me the truth. Is he really dead?”

Julian frowned, adjusting his silk tie. “The police confirmed the car was recovered from the river, Vanessa. Even Dante Moretti can’t survive a forty-foot drop into a raging torrent with his brakes completely severed. He’s gone.”

“Then why do I feel like someone is watching us?” Vanessa whispered, her eyes darting toward the shadows near the private club entrance.

Before Julian could answer, the heavy double doors of the private lounge swung open.

The room went dead silent. The jazz band in the main hall seemed to stop playing in unison.

Dante Moretti walked into the room.

He wasn't alone. Flanked by Vince and four heavily armed enforcers, Dante strode across the plush carpet with the unhurried, terrifying grace of a lion walking into a pen of wounded gazelles.

Julian’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the floorboards, amber liquid splashing across his Italian leather shoes.

Vanessa let out a choked, terrified gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as she staggered backward against the wall, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated horror.

“D-Dante...” Julian stammered, his face draining of every drop of color until he looked like a corpse. “Y-You’re... how...?”

Dante stopped three feet from their table, his slate-grey eyes gleaming with cold, terrifying amusement. He slid his hands leisurely into the pockets of his tailored trousers.

“Surprised to see me, Julian?” Dante asked, his voice echoing smoothly through the silent lounge. “Did you honestly think a little brake fluid and an aging oak tree were going to clear my estate?”

Vanessa’s knees buckled, and she slid down the wall until she hit the floor, sobbing hysterically. “Dante, please... it was Julian! He forced me! He threatened me!”

Julian glared down at her with pure venom before turning back to Dante, desperately trying to salvage a shred of his corporate composure. “Dante, let’s be rational. We can negotiate. The offshore accounts are fully accessible—we can split—”

“There is nothing to negotiate,” Dante interrupted coldly.

He turned his head slightly toward the doorway.

“Bring her in.”

The heavy doors opened again, and Cara Fields walked into the private lounge. She wore a sharp, custom-tailored black pantsuit that fit her impeccably, her hair styled in sleek waves, walking with a calm, unshakeable confidence that commanded the room.

Julian stared at her in utter bewilderment. “Who the hell is this?”

“This,” Dante said, resting a protective, reassuring hand gently on Cara’s shoulder, “is the waitress who heard every word you whispered behind the mahogany partition at Bellini’s. The woman who pulled me out of a sinking car while you two were already measuring my suits for inheritance.”

Julian’s face twisted into an expression of murderous rage. He lunged forward across the table, his fingers clawing toward Dante’s throat, screaming, “You bitch!”

Before Julian could take two steps, Vince moved with blinding speed, slamming Julian face-first down onto the mahogany table and pinning his arms behind his back with a deafening crash of glassware.

Dante didn't even flinch. He looked down at Julian and Vanessa with absolute disdain.

“Vince, call federal prosecutor Harrison,” Dante commanded smoothly. “Send him the encrypted financial ledgers, the audio logs of their conversation at Bellini’s, and the corporate wire transfer records. Let the federal penitentiary be their new home.”

He turned his gaze back to Cara, offering her a calm, approving nod.

“And as for us,” Dante murmured softly, “I believe we have a restaurant to buy.”
