Chapter 9 - The New Empire

Three months later, the autumn chill gave way to a crisp, bright winter afternoon in the city.

Bellini’s—the iconic, high-end restaurant where the entire nightmare had begun—had undergone a complete, high-profile ownership transition. Following the sudden, mysterious disappearance and federal indictment of its previous silent financial backers (namely Julian Vance), the restaurant had been quietly purchased by a new holding firm and completely renovated from top to bottom.

Inside the grand dining hall, the crystal chandeliers sparkled brighter than ever, and the white tablecloths gleamed beneath the afternoon sun.

At a private corner booth—the very same booth behind the mahogany partition where a waitress had once overheard a murder plot—sat Dante Moretti.

He wasn't reading financial reports or dodging federal investigators anymore. The federal trials had concluded swiftly and decisively; Julian Vance and Vanessa Moretti were currently beginning consecutive life sentences in maximum-security federal prison with zero chance of parole. The Moretti syndicate had been restructured into a legitimate, dominant real estate and commercial investment empire, cleansed of its darkest elements under Dante’s absolute, unyielding supervision.

A shadow fell across the table.

Dante looked up.

Standing before him was Cara Fields. She wasn't wearing a black vest or carrying a tray of espresso cups anymore. She wore a sophisticated emerald-green silk dress, her posture confident, her eyes bright and free of fear.

In her hands, she carried a silver tray holding a single cup of dark, steaming black coffee and a warm slice of apple pie with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese melted over the top.

She set the plate down gently on the white tablecloth.

Dante raised an eyebrow, a slow, warm smile spreading across his face. “Is this professional courtesy, or are you checking up on your favorite patron?”

Cara pulled out the opposite chair, sat down across from him, and rested her chin on her hand, a playful spark in her eyes.

“Let’s call it quality control,” Cara replied smoothly. “As the new managing partner of Bellini’s, I have to ensure our VIP guests are receiving the highest level of service.”

Dante chuckled—a rich, genuine sound that only a very few people in the world ever got to hear. He picked up his fork, took a bite of the warm pie, and nodded in satisfaction.

“Perfection,” Dante said, locking his slate-grey eyes onto hers. “Though I must admit, I preferred it when you were just serving coffee and saving my life in ravines.”

Cara leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table, a confident smile playing across her lips.

“Mr. Moretti, don't forget,” she whispered softly. “I’m the only person in this city who knows exactly how fast your car takes a turn. Don't test me.”

Dante’s smile widened, a deep, magnetic warmth filling his gaze as he raised his coffee cup in a silent toast to the woman who had walked out of the shadows and taken over his world.

“Never in this lifetime, Ms. Fields. Never in this lifetime.”
