“Don’t You Dare Talk To Me Like That Again,” The Fat Woman Said…Then The Mafia Boss Smiled
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that again.”
The ledger struck the mahogany desk like a gunshot.
Every man in the restaurant’s hidden basement went silent.
Madeleine Hayes stood behind the desk, exhausted after eighty hours of work, her glasses slipping down her nose and her black blouse clinging between her shoulders.
Across from her, Matteo Rizzi stared in disbelief.
He had called her a fat cow.
He had told her she should be grateful anyone allowed a woman like her into the building.
Then he threatened her life and waited for her to lower her eyes.
Madeleine had spent thirty-six years doing exactly that.
She had swallowed laughter in school hallways, insults in corporate boardrooms, and the quiet humiliation of a fiancé who wanted her thinner before their engagement photographs.
She had earned two degrees, uncovered losses worth millions, and still watched powerful men destroy her career because she was the easiest woman in the room to blame.
But tonight, something inside her had finally stopped bending.
“Yes,” she said, meeting Matteo’s gaze. “I can speak to you that way.”
His hand drifted toward the gun beneath his jacket.
The restaurant manager went pale.
Two armed men blocked the doorway.
And behind them stood Lorenzo Falcone—the man federal agents called a crime boss and everyone else in Chicago called the King.
He said nothing.
He simply watched Madeleine as Matteo stepped closer and looked over her body with open contempt.
“You sit down here eating our food,” Matteo sneered, “pretending you understand numbers.”
The familiar shame burned across Madeleine’s skin.
But this time, she did not shrink.
She opened the enormous ledger between them and pushed it across the desk.
“Page four hundred twelve.”
Matteo’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Lorenzo Falcone noticed.
Madeleine noticed him noticing.

Then Matteo’s hand disappeared beneath his jacket as she turned the ledger toward the most dangerous man in Chicago.
