Chapter 6 - The King’s Confession

Madeleine turned around, leaning back against the edge of her glass coffee table, crossing her arms.
“You were listening through the intercom the whole time,” she accused, though there was no heat in her voice.
“Naturally,” Lorenzo admitted without an ounce of remorse, stopping just a foot away from her. His stormy gray eyes roved over her face, filled with a deep, smoldering intensity that made her breath hitch. “Though I have to admit, watching you dismantle Moretti like a cheap puzzle was the most erotic thing I’ve witnessed in a decade.”
Madeleine felt a warm flush creep up her neck, though she kept her expression stubbornly neutral. “Save the flattery for the annual shareholders meeting, Mr. Falcone.”
“It’s not flattery, Madeleine,” Lorenzo said softly, the playful edge vanishing from his voice, replaced by something heavy, raw, and entirely unguarded.
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping the side of her face, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheekbone.
For months, their relationship had been defined by power, ledgers, strategy, and mutual respect. But beneath the surface of boardrooms and corporate takeovers, a fierce, magnetic gravity had been pulling them together, night after endless night, over working dinners and shared bottles of vintage Barolo.
“For twenty years,” Lorenzo murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes, “this city has tried to kill me, buy me, or box me into a corner. Every woman I’ve ever met was either terrified of what I am, or in love with what I own. You... you stood in a room full of armed killers, looked my worst capo in the eye, and told him he was an idiot.”
“He was an idiot,” Madeleine whispered, her heart pounding against her ribs as his thumb brushed across her jaw.
“He was,” Lorenzo agreed, a faint, rare smile touching his lips. “And you are the most magnificent creature I have ever laid eyes on, Madeleine Hayes. Inside and out.”
He leaned down slowly, bridging the final inches between them, and pressed his lips softly against hers.
The kiss was not rushed or predatory. It was deep, deliberate, and carried the weight of a man who had finally found his equal in a world built on compromise.
Madeleine’s hands rose instinctively, her fingers gripping the lapels of his charcoal jacket as she pulled him closer, surrendering completely to the fierce, electric warmth of the moment.
When they finally broke apart for air, Lorenzo rested his forehead against hers, his breathing slightly elevated.
“Move out of that dreary apartment in Lincoln Park,” Lorenzo whispered against her hair. “Move into the estate on the Gold Coast. Reign with me, Madeleine. Not as a CFO, not as an employee... but as my queen.”
Madeleine pulled back slightly, looking into his deep gray eyes, a slow, radiant smile breaking across her face.

“Only,” she teased softly, “if I get to audit your personal checking account once a week.”
Lorenzo let out a rich, dark laugh, pulling her back into his arms. “Deal.”
