Chapter 7 - The Final Audit

Two weeks later, the underworld of Chicago was in open, panicked revolt.

With Moretti’s primary shell companies frozen by federal tax liens and his union rackets dismantled by Madeleine’s financial subpoenas, the Moretti family was in freefall. Sensing blood in the water, rival crews were moving in on Moretti’s territory, while federal prosecutors were issuing indictments left and right.

The war was effectively over before it had even begun. Not with a bloodbath in the streets, but with a red pen and a federal audit.

To celebrate the consolidation of the city’s entire economic and criminal landscape under the Falcone banner, Lorenzo hosted a private, high-society gala at the historic Gold Coast mansion—a sprawling, limestone fortress surrounded by iron gates and manicured gardens overlooking the lake.

The ballroom was a masterpiece of crystal chandeliers, gilded moldings, and priceless art, filled with the city’s most elite power brokers, corrupt judges, legitimate corporate CEOs, and high-ranking syndicate capos.

At the center of the grand staircase, all eyes converged.

The doors swung open.

Lorenzo Falcone descended the steps, looking every bit the undisputed king of Chicago in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo.

But it was the woman on his arm that stopped every breath in the room.

Madeleine Hayes wore a custom-tailored, emerald-green silk velvet gown that hugged her voluptuous curves with breathtaking, regal elegance. A diamond-encrusted necklace glittered against her collarbone, her dark hair was styled in cascading waves, and her eyes surveyed the room with calm, unshakeable, absolute dominion.

She wasn't hiding. She wasn't shrinking. She walked with the peerless grace of a woman who owned every square foot of the floor beneath her feet.

As they reached the bottom of the stairs, the orchestra swelled into a rich, sweeping waltz.

Lorenzo led her to the center of the marble floor as the crowd parted, applause rippling through the room in a wave of respectful, awestruck tribute.

He pulled her into his arms, spinning her gracefully beneath the glittering lights.

“You’re making half the city council hyperventilate,” Lorenzo murmured against her ear as they moved in sync with the music.

“Good,” Madeleine whispered back, a triumphant smile curving her lips. “They need the exercise. Besides, I just finished auditing the catering budget for this party. You were overcharged by twelve percent on the champagne.”

Lorenzo let out a deep, rich laugh that echoed warmly across the ballroom—a sound of pure, unadulterated happiness.

“My accountant, my fierce protector, and my future wife,” Lorenzo murmured, pulling her closer as the cameras flashed like lightning around them, capturing the exact moment the king of Chicago bowed to the queen who had balanced his ledgers—and stolen his soul.
