Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Six months later, the spring thaw brought vibrant wildflowers back to the mountain slopes of Asheville.

Grace walked down the stone pathway leading from the main estate, carrying baby Elena in a soft canvas sling against her chest. The morning air was sweet with the scent of blooming azaleas and wet pine.

At the edge of the property, overlooking the vast, endless green expanse of the valley below, stood a newly planted oak sapling, its branches stretching proudly toward the infinite sky.

Julian walked up beside her, handing her a small copper watering can.

Grace tilted the spout, letting the cool water soak into the rich, dark soil around the base of the sapling.

"What are you thinking about, Gracie?" Julian asked gently, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Grace looked out over the mountains, her hand resting securely over her daughter's back. She thought of the frightened, quiet girl who had stood frozen in an apartment on Ashland Avenue eleven years ago. She thought of the waitress who had held an iron rod in a dark Chicago alley, and the wife who had stared down a slap in Myers Park without flinching.

"I was just thinking," Grace murmured, a radiant smile gracing her lips, "that sometimes things have to completely shatter before you realize how strong you actually are."

Julian smiled, pulling both his sister and his niece into a warm, protective embrace as the morning sun broke over the mountain peaks, illuminating a future that nothing in this world could ever touch.
