Chapter 5 - The First Echoes of a New World

The mountain air of Asheville carried the crisp, invigorating scent of pine and early autumn frost, a stark contrast to the suffocating, humid corporate concrete of Charlotte. Two weeks had passed since the night the glass shattered in Myers Park. In that short span, the name Ethan Walker had been thoroughly scrubbed from the financial registries of North Carolina, relegated to the dusty archives of federal indictments and bankruptcy court liquidation summaries.

Grace Vance sat at the heavy oak desk in the study of her family’s Asheville estate, her laptop open to a digital portfolio of architectural blueprints.

The morning sunlight streamed through the leaded glass windows, warming her back as she traced the lines of a community wellness center she was designing from scratch—a project funded entirely by her own independent holdings, completely detached from Vance Capital.

A soft knock rapped against the open door.

Julian walked in, holding a slim leather-bound folio and a porcelain cup of green tea. He set the cup down beside her keyboard without interrupting her flow, leaning his hip against the edge of the mahogany desk.

"Federal marshals wrapped up the final asset forfeiture of Walker Development this morning," Julian said evenly, his voice carrying that familiar, unshakeable calm. "The primary office building in Uptown has been acquired by a municipal trust. Your former husband is currently sharing a holding cell with a disgraced securities broker and an interstate car thief."

Grace didn't look up from her screen, though her hand paused over the trackpad. "Did he make any more statements to his defense counsel?"

"His court-appointed lawyer tried to file a motion for visitation, claiming he has a right to know the status of his child," Julian replied, a cold, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Christian drafted a response so legally devastating that the judge threw it out before Ethan even finished reading the copy. As far as the state of North Carolina—and this family—is concerned, that man has no legal or biological standing in your life."

Grace exhaled a slow, steady breath, leaning back into the ergonomic leather chair. She placed one hand over her lower abdomen, feeling the faint, reassuring flutter of movement. She was nineteen weeks pregnant now; the fear and trauma of that anniversary night had long since crystallized into an unyielding, fierce maternal strength.

"I don't feel anger anymore, Julian," Grace whispered, looking up at her eldest brother. "Just... distance. Like watching a movie about someone else's life."

"That's because your life actually started the night you walked out of that house," Julian said softly, reaching down to squeeze her shoulder. "Marcus and Christian are downstairs arguing over whether the nursery needs a custom bookshelf or a custom climbing gym. I suggest you go intervene before they tear down a load-bearing wall."

May you like

Grace laughed, a bright, melodic sound that filled the cavernous study. "I'll go handle my brothers. Honestly, sometimes I think having you three is harder than dealing with Ethan."

"Never," Julian smirked. "We're much better dressed."
