Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of an Empire

Ethan crashed hard into the mahogany dining table, sending the carefully arranged crystal glassware, the silver cutlery, and the roasted tenderloin cascading onto the floor in a deafening symphony of shattering glass and splintered wood.
He groaned, clutching his ribs, rolling onto the Persian rug as gravy and red wine soaked into the knees of his expensive trousers.
Lauren scrambled backward on her hands and knees like a crab scuttling away from a predator, her makeup smeared, her designer dress torn at the hem. She looked toward Julian, then toward Christian, her voice trembling with sheer terror. "You... you can't do this. This is kidnapping! This is assault! You're going to jail!"
Christian laughed—a sharp, barking sound that held no humor whatsoever. He pulled a heavy leather portfolio from under his arm, popped the brass locks, and pulled out a stack of crisp, legal documents bound with red ribbons.
"Let’s talk about jail, Lauren," Christian said, walking over and tossing the papers right into her lap like a handful of dirt. "Or better yet, let's talk about federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities violations."
Lauren stared at the top page, her breath catching in her throat.
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE WESTERN DISTRICT OF NORTH CAROLINA. CASE NO. 3:26-CV-00412-V PLAINTIFF: VANCE HOLDINGS LLC DEFENDANTS: ETHAN WALKER, LAUREN PIERCE
"What... what is this?" Lauren whispered, her fingers shaking so badly she could barely hold the paper.
"That," Christian said smoothly, kneeling down until he was eye-level with her, "is a comprehensive forensic audit of Walker Development’s books over the last fourteen months. Specifically, it details how you, Lauren Pierce, and my dear brother-in-law here systematically funneled three point six million dollars of corporate acquisition funds into a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under your maiden name."
Ethan stopped groaning on the floor. His head snapped up, his face turning an ash-gray color. "That... that's impossible. We buried those transactions—"
"You buried them from a standard IRS audit, Ethan," Christian smiled, a terrifying, shark-like grin. "You didn't bury them from a tier-one intelligence firm retained by a family that literally invented corporate surveillance in the Southeast. Every server ping, every encrypted WhatsApp message, every offshore transfer was intercepted and archived four months ago. My brother Julian knew about your little extracurricular affair before you even took Ms. Pierce out for her first overpriced steak dinner in Uptown."
Ethan stared at Julian in absolute, paralyzing horror. "You... you knew? You knew the whole time and you didn't say anything?"
"I was waiting to see how deep the rot went," Julian said coldly, straightening his cuffs. "I gave you enough rope to hang yourself, Ethan. And boy, did you tie a professional knot."
Lauren burst into panicked tears, her professional composure completely shattering. She looked at Ethan, her voice rising to a hysterical shriek. "You said they wouldn't find out! You said your family was just some old-money hicks from the country!"
Ethan flinched, not from Lauren's betrayal, but from the realization of what he had just lost. He scrambled on his hands and knees across the ruined dining room floor toward Grace, reaching out a trembling hand to grab the hem of her skirt.
"Grace... Gracie, please," Ethan sobbed, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation. "Look at me. Please. We're having a baby. We're a family. You love me. You know you love me! Don't let your brothers do this to me. I'll fire Lauren tomorrow! I'll sign over fifty percent of the company to you! Just... please tell them to stop!"
Grace looked down at him.
There was no anger in her eyes anymore. That was the most terrifying part. There was only a profound, infinite pity—the kind of look you give a stray animal that has proven too rabid to save.
"Five years ago, Ethan, I sold my grandmother's necklace to pay your payroll because I believed in the man you pretended to be," Grace said, her voice completely even. "Tonight, you brought your mistress into our home, mocked me, and struck me in the face while I was carrying your child."
She stepped back, sliding out of his reach.
"The man I loved died a long time ago, Ethan. You're just the stranger living in his clothes."
Julian nodded once to Marcus.
Without a word, Marcus grabbed Ethan by the collar of his ruined shirt, hauled him effortlessly to his feet, and marched him toward the front door like a ragdoll. Christian grabbed Lauren by the arm, hauling her up to her feet despite her shrieking protests, dragging her along behind them.
"Where... where are you taking us?!" Ethan screamed, thrashing wildly as Marcus pushed him out onto the front porch.
"Not to jail, Ethan," Julian said smoothly, walking past them into the cool night air, buttoning his overcoat. "Jail is too comfortable for you. You're going to a federal holding facility in Virginia where federal prosecutors are currently reviewing your wire fraud indictments. Bail is set at ten million dollars—which is funny, because as of five minutes ago, every single bank account, asset, and credit card associated with Walker Development has been frozen by order of Vance Holdings."
Julian paused at the door of his armored SUV, looking back at Ethan one last time.
"You wanted to play with the big boys, Ethan. Congratulations. You're bankrupt, you're indicted, and you'll be spending the next twenty years reflecting on what happens when you bite the hand that feeds you."
The heavy doors of the SUVs slammed shut.
In a matter of thirty seconds, the convoy rolled down the driveway, leaving the Myers Park mansion dead silent once more.
Grace stood in the center of the ruined foyer, surrounded by shattered glass and spilled wine.
Julian, Marcus, and Christian walked back inside, their faces softening immediately as they looked at their little sister. Julian stepped forward, opening his arms wide.
Grace walked into her eldest brother's embrace, burying her face against his shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the weight of the last five years finally lifted from her shoulders.
"Are you okay, Gracie?" Marcus asked gently, resting a heavy hand on her shoulder.
May you like
"I'm more than okay," Grace whispered, pulling back and looking at her three brothers with a bright, genuine smile that hadn't graced her face in years. "I'm free."
Julian smiled, kissing the top of her head. "Good. Now, pack your bags. You're coming home with us."
