Chapter 2 - Silence in the Ballroom

The shock wave of Enzo Marchetti’s declaration rippled through the open ballroom doors like a physical blow.
For three full seconds, the two hundred guests standing inside the hall remained entirely frozen, glasses of champagne suspended halfway to their mouths, conversations cut off mid-syllable. Senator Vance, standing near the mahogany bar, choked quietly on his scotch. Judge Miller gripped the lapel of his tuxedo as if steadying himself for an earthquake.
Camilla Ashford stood paralyzed, her mouth slightly open, the color draining so fast from her face that her meticulously applied makeup suddenly looked harsh and mask-like.
“Enzo... you... you can't be serious,” Camilla stammered, her voice cracking as the humiliating reality of the moment began to sink in. She glanced wildly around the room, expecting her father, industrialist Arthur Ashford, to step forward and defend her honor. But Arthur Ashford was staring straight down at his polished oxblood shoes, suddenly finding the wood grain exceptionally interesting. “We’re hosting our engagement gala! The wedding invitations went out this morning! You’re humiliating me in front of—of everyone!”
Enzo didn't blink. He kept his arm partially positioned to shield Adeline, his dark eyes locked onto Camilla with an expression of absolute, unyielding disgust.
“You had eleven days to prove you belonged in this house, Camilla,” Enzo said, his voice carrying an icy resonance that sliced through the quiet hall. “Instead, you spent them terrorizing the staff, acting with petty cruelty, and treating human beings like disposable objects. I tolerated your vanity because your father and I had commercial interests to align. But abusing a member of my household staff in my own hallway crosses a line you can never walk back from.”
“She’s just a maid!” Camilla shrieked, the thin veneer of her high-society composure shattering completely. Her face flushed a furious, blotchy red. “She’s a nobody! A low-class cleaner you hired off the docks! You’re throwing away a multi-million-dollar merger and a society marriage for a servant?”
“She is an employee under my roof,” Enzo corrected quietly, stepping forward so that his imposing frame towered over her. “Which makes her my responsibility. And you are a liability I am cutting loose.”
He raised his hand and gestured toward the shadows near the grand staircase.
Marcus Vance—Enzo’s chief of security and shadow—materialized instantly, flanked by two burly guards in dark suits.
“Escort Miss Ashford and her belongings off the property,” Enzo ordered, his tone flat and absolute. “Ensure her father’s security detail is notified that her access codes have been revoked. If she attempts to re-enter this estate, treat her as a trespasser.”
“Enzo, you can't do this! My father will destroy you! He’ll pull every shipping contract along the river!” Camilla screamed, thrashing as Marcus gently but firmly took her by the elbow, steering her away from the corridor toward the side exit. Her desperate cries echoed off the marble walls until the heavy exterior doors swung shut, cutting her off from the estate entirely.
The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.
Enzo turned his attention back to Adeline. The young woman was still pressed against the wall, clutching the oversized cashmere coat tightly around her shoulders. The warmth of the garment contrasted sharply with the cold terror still racing through her veins.
“Can you stand?” Enzo asked, his voice softening noticeably as he looked down at her bruised wrist.
Adeline swallowed hard, blinking back the hot tears of shock and humiliation that threatened to spill over her eyelashes. “Yes, Mr. Marchetti. I... I think so.”
“Don't call me Mr. Marchetti,” he said quietly. “Not tonight.”
He extended a large, calloused hand toward her. For a second, Adeline hesitated. Everyone in Chicago knew who Enzo Marchetti was—the untouchable syndicate boss who controlled the city's shipping lanes, financial syndicates, and underground security networks with an iron fist. Men feared him; women swooned over him from a safe distance. He was not a savior of maids. He was a predator who simply played by his own strict, inscrutable rules.
And yet, as she looked into his dark, steady eyes, she saw no malice there—only an unyielding fury directed entirely at the cruelty she had just suffered.
Adeline placed her trembling hand in his.
Enzo’s grip was firm, warm, and secure. He pulled her gently to her feet, ignoring the stares of the two hundred elite guests peering out from the ballroom like spectators at a Roman colosseum.
“Marcus,” Enzo called out without turning around.
“Boss?” Marcus responded, having quickly returned from escorting Camilla off the premises.
“Cancel the gala. Have the staff clear the rooms. Send everyone home.” Enzo’s gaze remained fixed on Adeline. “And call Dr. Vance. Have him meet us in the private study immediately.”

“Right away, Boss,” Marcus replied, casting a discreet, curious glance at Adeline before turning to address the stunned crowd inside the ballroom.
Enzo looked down at Adeline, noticing the way she flinched slightly when she put weight on her left ankle—another souvenir from Camilla’s vicious shoving match earlier in the evening. Without another word, Enzo bent down and scooped her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her bridal-style down the quiet, private corridor away from the gaze of Chicago’s most powerful people.
