A year later, the financial landscape of Chicago had fundamentally shifted.
The Marchetti Foundation—jointly led by Enzo and Adeline—had quietly taken over dozens of failing public welfare programs, funding community hospitals, legal aid clinics for abused workers, and educational scholarships for underprivileged students.
In the private study of the Marchetti estate, Adeline sat behind the large mahogany desk reviewing a portfolio of upcoming community initiatives.
The heavy oak door opened, and Enzo walked in, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped box. He set it gently on top of her papers.
“What’s this?” Adeline asked, raising an eyebrow with a playful smile.
“An anniversary present,” Enzo replied, leaning against the edge of the desk. “Open it.”
Adeline untied the silk ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside rested a delicate, custom-designed gold bracelet featuring a small, subtle engraving of a pair of interlocking keys.

“To remind you,” Enzo murmured softly, leaning down to press a kiss to her temple, “that no door in this house—and no door in this city—will ever be locked against you again.”
Adeline smiled, slipping the bracelet onto her wrist over the faint, faded scar where the riding crop had once struck her. The pain of that night was gone; what remained was only the strength of the woman she had fought to become.
