Chapter 5 - The Acquisition

The boardroom of Ashford Global Logistics smelled of old money, panic, and cheap cologne.

At the center of the mahogany table sat Arthur Ashford, his silver hair uncharacteristically disheveled, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at the financial assessment dossier spread out before him. Surrounding him were three corporate board members whose faces were pale with the realization that their company was hours away from total liquidation.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Enzo Marchetti walked in, flanked by Marcus Vance. But it was the person walking beside Enzo that made Arthur Ashford’s head snap up in furious disbelief.

Adeline Croft wore a sharply tailored charcoal-gray pantsuit that commanded the room. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, elegant knot, and she carried a leather portfolio tucked under her arm. The bandages on her wrist were hidden beneath her cuffs, but the posture she held was one of absolute, unshakable authority.

“What is the meaning of this?” Arthur Ashford spluttered, standing up abruptly from his leather chair. He glared at Adeline, his face turning a mottled red. “What is that—that maid doing in this corporate office? Have you lost your mind, Marchetti? You bring a servant into a merger negotiation?”

“She is not a maid, Arthur,” Enzo said smoothly, pulling out a chair at the head of the table and seating himself with terrifying calm. “She is my chief financial restructuring consultant. And she is the one who audited your books.”

Arthur slammed his palms onto the table. “This is a joke! A farce! We will never sign over our harbor rights to a syndicate boss and some nobody off the street!”

Adeline stepped forward. She didn't flinch under Arthur’s furious glare. Instead, she opened her portfolio, pulled out a single laminated spreadsheet, and laid it directly in front of the aging industrialist.

“It’s not a joke, Mr. Ashford,” Adeline said, her voice cutting through the tense air with crystal clarity. “On page four, you’ll find the forensic breakdown of the offshore shell accounts you used to funnel municipal kickbacks since 2012. On page seven, the documentation of maritime smuggling violations through Pier 42. And on page nine, the exact paper trail proving that your daughter’s extravagant lifestyle was entirely funded by skimming employee pension reserves.”

Arthur stared down at the spreadsheet, his breath hitching in his throat. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking suddenly decades older.

“How... how did you find this?” he whispered, his voice cracking.

“When you spend eleven days cleaning a man’s house, you learn how people hide things,” Adeline replied evenly, her eyes locking onto his. “When you spend six years at Columbia studying corporate fraud, you learn how to trace them.”

Enzo leaned back in his chair, a faint, proud smile touching the corner of his lips. He crossed his arms over his chest, letting Adeline completely dismantle the man who had allowed his daughter to terrorize anyone she deemed beneath her.

“You have ten minutes to sign the transfer documents, Arthur,” Enzo said quietly, his voice carrying the weight of a death sentence. “You hand over your shares in the Chicago Harbor Logistics cartel at a forty percent discount, and my legal team ensures you and your board walk away with enough capital to retire quietly in Florida. You refuse, and I hand these files directly to the federal prosecutor before the stock market opens tomorrow morning.”

Arthur looked around the table at his board members. Every single one of them was avoiding his gaze, staring intently at the floor—the universal sign that power had shifted, and resistance was entirely futile.

With shaking hands, Arthur picked up a heavy Montblanc pen, pulled the document toward him, and signed his name at the bottom of the page.

The Ashford shipping empire—built on decades of arrogance and cruelty—was gone.
