Chapter 2 - The Echo Chamber

By noon, the phone’s vibration against the hospital bedside table had turned into a steady, predatory hum. Rachel did not answer, but she watched the voicemail transcripts populate with mechanical indifference.
*“Rachel, pick up the phone,”* her father’s voice read on the automated text. *“You don’t understand how this looks. The neighbors saw two cruisers pull down the lane. Vanessa is beside herself. Lily is crying. Your mother has high blood pressure, and you’re letting strange people into family affairs.”*
An hour later, Evelyn texted:
*“A misunderstanding in a private home does not belong in the legal system. Vanessa slipped. She lost her grip on the pan because the grease caught. Bring Emma home so we can treat her properly. I have the aloe plants from the sunroom.”*
Rachel looked from the screen to Emma’s vitals. The heart rate monitor pulsed at a steady eighty-two beats per minute. Emma’s left eyelid twitched; her small hand, free of IV lines, curled into the cotton sheet.
“Aloe,” Rachel muttered under her breath.
The door pushed open, and Officer Miller returned, accompanied by a female detective in plainclothes carrying an evidence bag.
“Rachel,” Miller said quietly. “Vanessa isn’t cooperating with the patrol unit sent to take a preliminary statement. She refused to open the door, claiming her attorney advised her to remain silent. Furthermore, your mother filed an emergency report claiming you unlawfully took Emma from the premises while she was under family care.”
Rachel stood slowly, her hands smoothing Emma’s blanket down over her knees. “My sister didn’t slip. The pan landed four feet from the stove, rim-first against the base of Lily’s high-backed dining chair. If grease caught, the fire alarm would have sounded. The alarm is wired directly above the range. It never went off.”
Detective Sarah Vance nodded, taking notes. “The hospital burns team took photographs before applying the sterile dressing. The burn pattern matches direct contact with the flat base of seasoned cast iron, followed by a blunt-force contusion along the jawline. We also have your mother’s text message entered into the chain of custody.”
“What happens now?” Rachel asked.

“Now,” Detective Vance replied, “we secure an arrest warrant.”
