Chapter 4 - The Arrest on High Ridge Terrace

Forty minutes later, two cruisers and an unmarked squad car pulled into the curving asphalt driveway of the Mercer estate.

Evelyn Mercer opened the heavy oak door before the officers could reach the porch. She wore a tailored beige cardigan, her silver hair pinned into a pristine chignon.

“Officers,” she said, her voice dripping with dismissive authority. “Whatever complaint Rachel filed, I assure you it was born of panic. My daughter has always had an overactive imagination and an unfortunate tendency toward hostility.”

Detective Vance walked past Evelyn’s outstretched hand without acknowledging it. “Vanessa Mercer. Is she inside?”

“She is upstairs resting with her daughter,” Evelyn said sharply, blocking the entry hall. “You have no right to enter this private residence without—”

Detective Vance held up the search and arrest warrant, sealed and signed by the county magistrate twenty minutes prior. “Felony child abuse causing serious bodily injury, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Step aside, Mrs. Mercer, or you will be charged with obstruction.”

From the top of the grand staircase, Vanessa appeared. She was thirty-two, slender, dressed in designer loungewear, her arms crossed over her chest. Behind her, six-year-old Lily peeked through the balusters, clutching a tablet.

“I didn’t do anything wrong!” Vanessa screamed down the stairs, her composure shattering instantly. “She took Lily’s place! She was eating Lily’s food! That child doesn’t listen to anyone! I told Rachel she needed discipline!”

“Vanessa, be quiet!” Evelyn commanded, spinning around. “Say nothing until Charles arrives!”

Two uniformed officers ascended the stairs with calm, practiced efficiency. When they brought Vanessa down in handcuffs, her face was mottled with red, furious blotches.

“You’re ruining my life!” she shrieked, struggling against the officer’s grip as she was led past the kitchen where the burnt pan had sat hours earlier. “Mom! Tell them! She provoked me!”

Evelyn watched the cruiser doors slam shut from the porch. For the first time in her life, the pristine neighborhood watched from behind manicured hedges as a Mercer was taken away in the back of a police car.
