Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

At 2:15 p.m., the hospital room door clicked open again. It wasn’t a nurse.
Arthur Mercer stood in the doorway, his gray hair neatly combed, his wool overcoat still smelling of damp pine needles from the driveway. He carried a plush brown bear with a pink ribbon around its neck.
“Rachel,” he said, his tone gentle, measured, the exact voice he used when presiding over town council zoning meetings. “Thank God. How is our girl?”
Rachel stepped between the bed and her father. “Stay there.”
Arthur paused, his smile faltering slightly. “Rachel, let’s not be theatrical. I know you’re terrified. We all are. But your mother is on the verge of a cardiac incident, and Vanessa—”
“Did you look at Emma before you put her pink cup in the sink?” Rachel asked, her voice dangerously level.
Arthur blinked. “What?”
“This morning. Emma was lying on the floor. Her face was smoking, Dad. The smell of scorched skin was in the air. You walked past her, picked up the juice cup, and washed it in the sink.”
“I was trying to keep things clean! We were in shock!” Arthur stepped forward, holding the bear out like a shield. “Vanessa made a terrible, frantic error in judgment. She thought Emma was lunging for Lily’s breakfast—she thought Lily was in danger of being scalded!”
“By scrambled eggs?”
“You know how Lily is! She has sensory issues; she panics when things are moved!” Arthur’s voice rose, losing its practiced veneer. “Emma shouldn’t have been wandering downstairs without you! Your mother explicitly told you to keep her upstairs until Lily finished eating!”
From the corner of the room, Officer Miller stepped out from the curtain alcove. “Sir. Step out into the corridor immediately.”
Arthur stiffened, his jaw tightening as he registered the badge and uniform. “This is a private family conversation, officer.”
“No,” Miller replied, his hand resting casually near his utility belt. “This is a hospital room where an active victim of felony child abuse is resting under protective hold. Step outside, or you will be arrested for trespassing and interfering with an active investigation.”
Arthur looked at Rachel, his eyes wide with disbelief and cold disappointment. “If you let them take Vanessa, Rachel, you don’t have a family anymore. You remember that. Your mother will never forgive you.”

“Good,” Rachel said. “Tell her to start practicing.”
