Chapter 5 - Emma Wakes

The hospital room had fallen into twilight when Emma finally stirred.

Outside the window, the city lights flickered through the cold autumn drizzle. Rachel sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers gently curled around Emma’s small, cool hand.

Emma’s eyelashes fluttered. She let out a soft, hitching breath that sounded like a sob caught midway in her throat.

“Mommy?”

Rachel leaned down, her lips brushing Emma’s left, uninjured temple. “I’m here, sweet girl. Mommy is right here.”

Emma tried to turn her head, then whimpered as the bandages pulled tight against her cheek. Her free hand moved toward her face, but Rachel caught it gently in hers.

“Don’t touch, baby. The doctors put medicine on your cheek to help it feel cool.”

Emma’s wide brown eyes searched Rachel’s face in the dim room. Tears welled along her lower lids, reflecting the green numbers of the heart monitor.

“Did I do something bad?” Emma whispered.

Rachel felt the words strike her chest like physical blows. “No, Emma. Never. You didn’t do anything bad.”

“Aunt Vanessa was mad at me,” the little girl murmured, her voice trembling with an agonizing confusion. “I sat on the big chair because the sun was pretty on the table. The eggs were there. I was hungry, Mommy.”

“You did nothing wrong,” Rachel repeated, her voice thick but fierce, anchoring the child with every syllable. “You are four years old. You are allowed to sit in the sun. You are allowed to eat breakfast. What Aunt Vanessa did was terrible, and mean, and wrong. And she will never, ever be near you again. I promise you that on my life.”

Emma rested her forehead against Rachel’s arm. “Where are we sleeping tonight?”

“Right here with me,” Rachel said. “And tomorrow, we’re going somewhere brand new. Just you and me.”
