Chapter 9 - The House by the Orchard

By autumn of the following year, the memory of High Ridge Terrace felt like a dark, receding shore viewed from a moving ship.

Rachel had used her savings and a fair settlement from the legal proceedings to relocate three hours north, to a quiet valley town surrounded by apple orchards and rolling hills. She took a job as a graphic designer for a regional publishing house, working mostly from a sunlit home office that looked out over a broad, unfenced meadow.

Emma was five now.

Her right cheek bore a faint, pale line tracing the curve of her cheekbone—a silver ribbon that the doctor said would fade further with time, but which Emma now regarded with curious nonchalance. To her, it was simply where her skin had been brave.

On a Saturday afternoon, Rachel watched from the kitchen window as Emma chased a yellow butterfly through the high grass with two children from down the lane. Emma’s laughter was loud, uncurbed, entirely free of hesitation. There were no rules here about screen time, no sacred territories, and no quiet corners where a little girl had to apologize for existing.

“Mommy!” Emma called, running toward the open back screen door, her sneakers muddy, her curls wild around her shoulders. “Look! Toby showed me where the caterpillars live!”

Rachel stepped onto the porch and knelt down, wiping a smudge of dirt from Emma’s uninjured cheek. “Did you make friends with them?”

“Yes! And Toby says I can have the biggest chair at his treehouse tomorrow!”

Rachel gathered her into her arms, inhaling the smell of warm sunlight, dried clover, and sweet, crisp air. “Of course you can, baby. You can sit wherever you want.”
