Chapter 2 - The Pearls and the Proxy

The transition had been executed with terrifying precision. Within twenty-four hours of Sienna’s rejection, Margaret Ashford had woven an elaborate, airtight deception. Using financial leverage, medical threats, and fabricated adoption records buried deep in county archives, the Ashfords had manufactured a fictional younger sister—a long-lost, illegitimate Ashford daughter named 'Clara' who had supposedly been raised abroad and was only now being introduced to Chicago high society.

And the girl forced to wear Sienna’s pearls, walk in Sienna’s shoes, and face the most feared mafia boss in America was Maeve Donnelly.

Maeve sat in the back of a black Town Car as it rolled through the iron security gates of the Marchetti estate three days later. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She wore a simple, elegant ivory dress chosen by Margaret—a dress that paled in comparison to the designer gowns Sienna usually wore, yet it felt heavy, suffocating, like a shroud.

“You will walk into that house,” Margaret had hissed into her ear before pushing her out the car door that morning. “You will keep your head down, you will answer to the name Clara Ashford, and you will play the devoted fiancée. If you slip up, if you mention your real name, or if my son’s medical bills go unpaid for even one second, I will ensure you and your brother rot in a debtor’s prison before the week is out.”

Now, Maeve stood in the grand foyer of the Marchetti mansion. The ceilings soared three stories high, framed by dark mahogany beams and towering crystal chandeliers. The air smelled of old leather, cedarwood, and expensive cologne.

Gabriel Ferraro, Elias’s towering, broad-shouldered security chief, stood at the top of the marble staircase, his expression carved from stone.

“Miss Ashford,” Gabriel said, his deep voice echoing off the stone floor. “Mr. Marchetti will see you now in his private study.”

Maeve swallowed hard, forcing her trembling legs to carry her up the steps. Every instinct screamed at her to turn around and run, but her mind flashed to her younger brother, Liam, lying in a sterile hospital bed waiting for a heart valve replacement that the Ashfords controlled. She had no choice.

Gabriel pushed open the heavy double doors of the study and stepped aside.

Maeve walked into the vast, dimly lit room. The rain continued to lash against the floor-to-ceiling windows behind the mahogany desk.

And there he was.

Elias Marchetti sat in a sleek, motorized black wheelchair behind the desk. He wore a charcoal three-piece suit, his shoulders broad and imposing, his dark hair neatly parted. But it was his face that paralyzed her—sharp cheekbones, a strong, unyielding jaw, and eyes the color of a winter storm that locked onto hers with an intensity that felt like physical weight.

He didn't speak. He just sat there, slowly, rhythmically turning a heavy black onyx ring around his little finger.

Clack. Spin. Clack.

The sound filled the suffocating silence of the room.

“So,” Elias finally spoke. His voice was a low, resonant baritone that vibrated straight through the floorboards. “The dutiful fiancée sends a substitute. How very modern of the Ashford family.”

Maeve froze, the blood draining entirely from her face.

He knows. The thought flashed through her mind like a bolt of lightning. He knew she wasn't Sienna. He knew the whole thing was a lie.

“I... I don't know what you mean, Mr. Marchetti,” Maeve stammered, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempts to steady it.

Elias wheeled forward slowly, the rubber tires gliding silently across the Persian rug. He stopped just three feet away from her. Up close, he was toweringly intimidating, even seated. The aura of danger surrounding him was palpable—a quiet, controlled violence that made every nerve ending in Maeve’s body scream with warning.

“Your mother spent twenty years treating the domestic staff like dirt,” Elias said softly, his gaze fixed unblinkingly on her face. “Do you really take me for a fool, Miss Donnelly? Do you think I don't know every soul who enters and leaves this estate? Do you think I wouldn't recognize the woman who has dusted the Ashford library for the past seven years?”

Maeve’s knees buckled slightly. The deception had collapsed before it had even begun. She braced herself for the anger, for the violence, for the inevitable order to have her thrown out into the rain—or worse.

Instead, Elias leaned back in his wheelchair, his expression unreadable.

“Why?” he asked quietly.

Maeve looked down at her hands, tears stinging the backs of her eyes. She thought of Liam. She thought of the cold, sterile hospital room, the ticking clock, and the merciless grip Margaret Ashford had on their lives.

“My brother,” Maeve whispered, her voice cracking. “He’s sick. He needs surgery. The Ashfords... they threatened to cut off his medical funding if I didn't come here and play their game. I didn't want to lie to you. I didn't want any of this.”

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the study.

Elias stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. He watched the way her hands trembled, the way she tried to stand tall despite being terrified out of her mind, and the absolute lack of greed or malice in her eyes. She wasn't here for money, or power, or social standing. She was here as a sacrificial lamb to save her family.

Just like he had spent his entire life protecting his own.

“Gabriel,” Elias called out without breaking eye contact with Maeve.

The security chief stepped into the room. “Boss?”

“Wire one hundred thousand dollars to St. Jude Hospital immediately, earmarked for Liam Donnelly’s surgical account. Clear all his medical debts in full.”

Maeve’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with shock. “What? Mr. Marchetti, I—I can’t accept—"

“You aren't accepting anything, Miss Donnelly,” Elias interrupted, his tone turning ice-cold and absolute. “You are entering into a contract. You walked into my house pretending to be Sienna Ashford to save your brother. Now, you will stay in this house as Clara Ashford—not because the Ashfords want you here, but because I want you here.”

Gabriel nodded crisply, turned on his heel, and left the room, closing the heavy doors behind him.

Maeve stared at Elias, her breath hitching in her throat. “Why are you doing this? What do you want from me?”

May you like

Elias slowly turned the black onyx ring on his finger, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“The Ashfords wanted to humiliate me by sending a broken bride,” Elias murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, possessive intensity. “Instead, they just handed me a weapon. And you, Maeve Donnelly, are going to help me use it.”
