Chapter 4 - The Dinner of the Wolves

The crystal chandeliers of the Marchetti estate ballroom blazed with blinding brilliance on Saturday night. Outside, sleek black limousines lined the curving driveway, disgorging Chicago’s elite, corrupt politicians, rival syndicate bosses, and the architects of the evening’s impending catastrophe: Marcus Caldwell and the entire Ashford family, led by Margaret and a nervous, visibly shaken Sienna.
Margaret Ashford wore a crimson designer gown that practically dripped with arrogance. As she walked into the grand ballroom on the arm of her husband, she carried herself with the supreme confidence of a woman who held the winning hand. Tonight was supposed to be the night the illusion shattered. Tonight, she would publicly expose 'Clara Ashford' as a low-born household maid, humiliate Elias Marchetti in front of the entire underworld commission, and tear up the multi-million-dollar corporate contracts.
In the center of the elevated dais sat Elias Marchetti.
He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his broad shoulders filling out the jacket with effortless authority. He sat rigidly in his motorized wheelchair, his expression carved from granite. Standing directly beside him, dressed in a stunning emerald-green silk gown that contrasted sharply with her pale, anxious face, was Maeve.
As Margaret and Marcus Caldwell approached the dais, the string quartet in the corner faded into an uneasy silence. Forty powerful guests held their breath, sensing the violent tectonic plates shifting beneath the surface of the room.
“Elias, darling,” Margaret cooed, her voice dripping with venomous sweetness as she stopped at the foot of the dais. “It is so wonderful to see you holding up so well under... challenging circumstances.”
Elias didn't blink. He slowly turned the black onyx ring on his finger. Clack. Spin. Clack.
“Margaret,” Elias replied, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. “You look radiant. Though I must admit, I am surprised to see you here tonight. Usually, vultures wait until the animal has actually stopped breathing before they pick at the bones.”
A nervous murmur rippled through the crowd. Marcus Caldwell stepped forward, his face flushing dark red.
“Save the dramatics, Marchetti,” Caldwell barked, stepping onto the dais. “Everyone in this room knows the truth. You’ve been parading an imposter around Chicago for the past month. That girl standing beside you isn't Clara Ashford. Her name is Maeve Donnelly. She’s a domestic maid from the Ashford household!”
Sienna Ashford stepped out from behind her mother, wearing a smug, triumphant smile. She looked directly at Maeve, her eyes filled with cruel satisfaction.
“Did you really think you could fool everyone, Maeve?” Sienna sneered loudly enough for the entire room to hear. “You’re nothing more than a servant playing dress-up with stolen pearls. You don't belong in this world. You never did.”
The silence in the ballroom became absolute. Every eye turned toward Maeve. Her hands trembled at her sides, and for a terrifying second, the years of servitude, fear, and insignificance threatened to swallow her whole.
She opened her mouth, ready to confess, ready to take the blame and walk away to protect her brother—
A heavy, calloused hand suddenly reached out and covered hers.
Maeve looked down. Elias had stopped turning his onyx ring. He gripped her hand with a strength that was warm, grounding, and utterly immovable.
Then, Elias Marchetti did something that made the blood freeze in every vein across the room.
He didn't look at Margaret. He didn't look at Marcus Caldwell.
Slowly, deliberately, Elias placed both hands on the armrests of his wheelchair.
Margaret’s smug smile faltered. Her eyes widened in sudden, incomprehensible horror.
With a smooth, powerful push of his arms, Elias Marchetti stood up.
He didn't stumble. He didn't lean on a cane. He stood at his full, imposing height of six-foot-two, towering over the dais, his broad shoulders squaring as the illusion of his paralysis vanished into thin air like smoke.
Gasps erupted across the ballroom. Several older syndicate bosses staggered backward, their drinks spilling onto the floor.
“You... you can walk,” Margaret whispered, her voice turning to a breathless, terrified squeak.
Elias stepped forward off the dais, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. He moved with the predatory, unhurried grace of a apex predator who had been watching fools dance on the edge of a cliff.
“The doctors told me my spine was permanently damaged,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. “They lied. Or rather... they reported what I paid them to report.”
He stopped directly in front of Marcus Caldwell and Margaret Ashford. The two conspirators looked as though they were staring face-to-face with a ghost.
“You wanted to test my loyalty, Margaret?” Elias asked softly, stepping closer until she was forced to lean back. “You wanted to see if the woman beside me would stay when the room got smaller? Sienna failed that test the moment she walked out of my hospital room. But you... you thought you could use a frightened young woman as a pawn in your corporate coup.”
Elias turned his head slowly, his piercing gray eyes locking onto Maeve, who stood frozen on the dais, tears streaming silently down her cheeks.
May you like
Then, Elias turned back to the crowd, his voice ringing with absolute, unchallenged authority.
“Let me introduce you all properly,” Elias announced, his voice echoing across the silent hall. “This is Maeve Donnelly. She is not an imposter. She is the bravest woman in the city of Chicago. And as of tonight, she is the future Mrs. Marchetti.”
