Chapter 5 - The Throne of Truth

The chaos that followed Elias’s declaration was swift, merciless, and absolute.
Within forty-eight hours, the full, crushing weight of the Marchetti empire descended upon the conspirators like an avalanche. Gabriel Ferraro executed a series of synchronized legal and financial strikes that dismantled the Ashford family’s corporate holdings brick by brick. Their shipping licenses were revoked, their bank accounts frozen under federal anti-corruption probes, and their luxury estate in Lincoln Park seized by the state to cover unpaid debts.
Marcus Caldwell suffered a very public, very quiet fall from grace when federal agents hauled him out of his downtown office in handcuffs, charged with securities fraud and conspiracy to commit corporate sabotage.
As for Margaret and Sienna Ashford, they packed their bags in terrified silence, fleeing Chicago on a red-eye flight to Europe before the warrants could reach their doors, stripped of their wealth, their social standing, and their power forever.
High above the city lights, inside the private penthouse office of the Marchetti Tower, the storm had finally cleared.
Maeve stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out at the glittering skyline of Chicago. She wore a simple white blouse and dark trousers, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. The heavy, suffocating weight of fear that had defined her entire life was gone, replaced by a quiet, steady peace she had never known was possible.
The heavy oak door opened behind her.
Footsteps echoed softly across the hardwood floor—steady, even, and strong.
Maeve didn't turn around; she didn't need to. She felt the familiar warmth of his presence closing the distance between them until his broad chest brushed gently against her back. Strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him, and a familiar, calloused hand rested securely over hers.
“You’re very quiet today,” Elias murmured, his lips brushing softly against the nape of her neck.
Maeve leaned back into his embrace, closing her eyes. “I was just thinking about how strange life is. A few months ago, I was invisible. I was just a maid scrubbing floors in a house where nobody saw me.”
“You were never invisible to me,” Elias corrected softly, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him.
He looked down into her eyes, his gray gaze stripped of all the cold armor, all the calculated menace, leaving behind only raw, unvarnished devotion.
“You saw through the wheelchair,” Maeve whispered with a small, teasing smile. “Though, to be fair, you were the one driving it.”
Elias let out a low, rich chuckle that vibrated through his chest. He reached up, his fingers gently tracing the line of her cheekbone.
“I spent my entire life building walls, trusting contracts, and testing people because I believed love was a weakness,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a quiet, solemn register. “I wanted to test the world to see who was worthy of standing beside me. But I was a fool, Maeve. I was looking for loyalty in all the wrong places, using deceit to find the truth.”
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a ring far more breathtaking than the one Sienna had worn—a brilliant, flawless solitaire diamond set in a custom band carved with the subtle, interlocking design of an onyx vine.
“Liam is out of surgery,” Elias added softly, watching her eyes widen with joy. “His heart valve is strong. He’s resting comfortably, and his medical care is secured for the rest of his life. You don't have to be afraid anymore.”
Maeve’s breath hitched, tears spilling over her lashes. “Elias...”
“Marry me, Maeve,” Elias whispered, dropping gracefully onto one knee on the hardwood floor, looking up at her with absolute, unwavering surrender. “Not as a proxy, not as a weapon against my enemies, but as the only woman who ever truly saw the man behind the throne.”
Maeve looked down at him—at the powerful, terrifying mafia boss who had risked his entire empire just to prove that real strength wasn't about control, but about who you chose to protect.
She didn't hesitate.

“Yes,” Maeve whispered, pulling him up into her arms and sealing their future with a kiss that needed no contracts, no lies, and no tests to prove its truth.
Down below, the city of Chicago roared with life, its lights stretching out endlessly into the dark night. But inside the penthouse, the king had finally laid down his armor—not because he was defeated, but because he had finally found something worth kneeling for.
