Chapter 3 - The Art of the Invisible

Life inside the Marchetti estate was not a prison; it was a gilded labyrinth designed to test every limit of Maeve’s endurance.
For the first month, Maeve lived in constant, paralyzing anxiety. To the outside world—to the socialites, the business partners, and the prying eyes of the Chicago press—she was officially introduced as Clara Ashford, the newly discovered younger sister of Sienna, stepping in to honor the high-society wedding contract after Sienna fell 'gravely ill.'
The media circus was deafening. Headlines screamed across the front pages of the Chicago Tribune and digital tabloids alike: THE MAFIA BOSS AND THE MYSTERY BRIDE: ELIAS MARCHETTI’S UNEXPECTED ENGAGEMENT.
Margaret Ashford had calculated that Elias, confined to a wheelchair and desperate to save face after Sienna’s rejection, would accept the proxy bride without question to maintain his public image of untouchable dominance.
She had severely underestimated the man.
Elias didn't care about the press. He didn't care about society weddings. He cared about control. And behind closed doors, his relationship with Maeve evolved into something strange, intense, and entirely unexpected.
Because Elias was supposedly paralyzed, Maeve found herself spending hours every day assisting him. She pushed his wheelchair through the expansive sculpture gardens, read confidential shipping manifests aloud to him while he reviewed international ledgers, and helped him transfer from his chair to the heavy oak dining table during their quiet, intensely private dinners.
At first, Maeve was painfully awkward, her hands trembling whenever she touched the broad muscles of his shoulders to steady him. But Elias was endlessly patient—a side of the feared crime boss that no one in Chicago would ever believe existed.
One evening, as the rain drummed against the glass conservatory, Maeve stood behind his wheelchair, gently adjusting a cashmere blanket over his knees.
“You don't have to keep doing this, you know,” Maeve said softly, her fingers pausing near his shoulder.
“Doing what?” Elias asked, not looking up from a dossier he was reviewing.
“Treating me like a human being instead of a prisoner. I know why I’m here. I’m a pawn in whatever game you’re playing against the Ashfords.”
Elias lowered the dossier. He turned his head slightly, looking up at her through his dark lashes.
“You think you’re a pawn, Maeve?”
It was the first time he had used her real name inside the manor. The sound of it—spoken in that deep, resonant baritone—sent a warm shiver straight down her spine.
“Aren't I?” she asked, biting her lower lip. “I’m living under a false name, lying to the entire city, and playing house with a man everyone in Chicago is terrified of.”
Elias reached up. His large, warm hand wrapped gently around her wrist, stopping her movements. His skin was rough, calloused from decades of power and violence, yet his grip was surprisingly tender.
“A pawn is sacrificed when it becomes inconvenient,” Elias murmured, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a hypnotic gravity. “I haven't sacrificed a single thing since you walked through those doors. In fact, for the first time in ten years, I actually look forward to coming home to an empty room—because I know it won't be empty anymore.”
Maeve’s breath hitched. She stared down into his face, feeling the magnetic pull of his presence drawing her in, blurring the lines between the lie she was forced to live and the dangerous, undeniable truth of what was growing between them.
Before she could answer, the heavy double doors of the conservatory burst open.
Gabriel Ferraro strode into the room, his expression grim, holding a encrypted tablet computer in his hand.
“Boss,” Gabriel said sharply, pausing when he saw the proximity between Elias and Maeve. He cleared his throat. “We have a breach. Marcus Caldwell and Salvatore’s inner circle... they’re moving faster than we anticipated.”
Elias released Maeve’s wrist, though his eyes lingered on hers for a second longer before turning cold and sharp. He wheeled himself around to face his security chief.
“Talk.”
“The Ashfords just finalized a backdoor coalition with the Caldwell shipping syndicate,” Gabriel reported, tapping the screen. “They’re planning a hostile corporate takeover of Marchetti Logistics while you’re incapacitated. They think you’re weak, Elias. And they’re planning to use Miss Donnelly—and her true identity—as public leverage to invalidate the engagement contract and sue for damages.”
Maeve felt the blood drain from her face. “My identity? But... how would they find out? Margaret kept all my records locked in the estate safe!”
“Margaret Ashford is a pragmatic scorpion,” Elias said coldly, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, icy danger. He slowly turned the black onyx ring on his finger. Clack. Spin. Clack. “She realized she miscalculated. She thinks that by exposing you as a fraud, she can ruin my reputation in front of the commission and seize control of the waterfront contracts.”
“What are we going to do?” Maeve asked, panic rising in her chest.
May you like
Elias looked up at her, a dark, terrifyingly confident smile touching his lips.
“We aren't going to do anything defensively, Maeve,” Elias said smoothly. “We are going to let them walk right into the trap they set for us. And when they arrive at the estate this weekend for the formal engagement dinner... we are going to show Chicago what happens when you try to bury a Marchetti.”
