Chapter 1 - The Forbidden Floor and the Slipping Sneaker

The private executive wing of St. Jude Memorial Hospital was a realm of sterile silence, punctuated only by the low, mechanical hum of life-support systems and the rhythmic click of expensive heels on polished marble floors. It was a floor meant exclusively for the elite, the untouchable, and the deeply corrupt. For two years, suite 404 had remained a guarded fortress, a place where ordinary hospital staff were strictly forbidden to tread, let alone a low-level catering waitress like Mia Sutton.

Mia’s shifts were a blur of exhaustion. Working double shifts to pay off her mother’s escalating medical bills, she had taken a temporary gig with an upscale catering agency assigned to a private corporate gala hosted on the hospital's fifth-floor terrace. Her instructions were explicit: stay in the service corridors, deliver the silver coffee urns to the designated lounge, and do not, under any circumstances, wander toward the private west wing.

Yet, exhaustion is a cruel master. Disoriented by a labyrinth of identical white corridors and carrying a heavy silver tray laden with fresh espresso, Mia took a wrong turn. She found herself standing just outside the heavy double doors of suite 404.

Before she could retrace her steps, the heavy oak door creaked open an inch. From within, a chilling conversation drifted into the hallway.

“The board is getting restless, Julian,” a voice murmured—sharp, cultured, and laced with quiet malice. It was the voice of Dr. Alistair Vance, the hospital's chief of neurology and a man whose face frequently graced the covers of medical journals. “Two years is a long time for a man to remain in a deep vegetative state. People are starting to ask questions about the neuro-stimulant logs.”

A second voice—cold, confident, and dripping with aristocratic arrogance—responded.

“Let them ask,” Julian Vance replied. Julian was the younger brother of the man lying inside the bed, and the current acting head of the sprawling Vance family syndicate. “They can look at all the medical charts they want. The induced coma was designed to look like a traumatic brain injury complications loop. As long as the ventilator keeps pushing air at a minimal volume, his brain starves slowly, invisibly.”

Mia froze, the silver tray trembling in her hands. She recognized Julian Vance from financial news channels. He was a ruthless corporate titan, publically mourning his older brother Dante—the legendary, feared lord of the underworld who had mysteriously collapsed after a private summit two years ago.

“And the nutrition reduction?” Dr. Alistair asked, leaning closer.

“Cut it by half starting tonight,” Julian instructed smoothly, his voice devoid of any familial warmth. “We need his physical body to degrade naturally. By next week, when the annual shareholder meeting takes place, we’ll announce his peaceful, inevitable passing due to organ failure. Then the entire syndicate structure, along with the offshore accounts, transfers completely to my control. No loose ends.”

“And the medical monitors?”

“Set the thresholds to maximum tolerance. If there’s any sudden fluctuation, the automated nurses will assume it’s a standard electrical glitch. Everything is in place.”

Inside the hallway, Mia’s breath caught in her throat. Her chest rose and fell in short, panicked gasps. She had stumbled upon a high-level assassination conspiracy, orchestrated by a brother against a brother, hidden behind the immaculate white walls of a premier medical institution.

Panic surged through her veins. She needed to run. She needed to drop the tray, find a phone, call the police—anything. She pivoted sharply on her heel, her cheap, worn-out catering sneakers meeting a slick puddle of espresso that had leaked from a poorly sealed thermos on her tray.

The rubber sole offered zero traction against the polished marble.

With a sudden, sickening slide, Mia’s feet flew out from under her. The silver tray went flying into the air, clattering violently against the corridor wall, sending porcelain cups and silver silverware crashing across the floor in a cacophony of sound.

Mia pitched forward, her arms flailing wildly as she crashed straight through the slightly ajar double doors of suite 404, tumbling directly into the restricted, heavily monitored sanctuary of the comatose mafia lord.
