Chapter 2 - The Accidental Kiss That Woke the Dead

The momentum of her fall carried Mia forward across the sterile linoleum floor, right up to the edge of the high-tech medical bed. Her hands shot out to break her fall, but her balance completely abandoned her.

Her lips crashed directly against the lips of the man lying motionless beneath the heavy white sheets—Dante Vance, the man who had been trapped in an unyielding coma for seven hundred and thirty days.

It was an impossible collision of fate, a clumsy accident born of spilled coffee and rubber soles. But the moment their lips met, a violent, electric shock seemed to tear through the silent room.

The effect was instantaneous and terrifying.

The advanced vital-sign monitors beside the bed didn't just beep—they screamed. A piercing, multi-tonal alarm wailed through the suite as red warning lights began flashing frantically across the medical equipment. The heart monitor, which had ticked with a sluggish, mechanical patience for two long years, suddenly exploded into a wild, violent, erratic rhythm. The green digital line spiked into jagged, aggressive mountains.

Mia scrambled backward in blind terror, her hands scraping against the floor. As she pulled away, a sharp edge of a broken porcelain cup sliced into her inner lip, drawing a bright bead of crimson blood.

“Oh my God,” she whispered, trembling uncontrollably as she stared at the flashing monitors. “I... I broke him. I killed him.”

She expected the man to remain lifeless. Instead, the impossible happened.

Beneath the thin hospital gown, Dante Vance’s chest rose with a violent, shuddering gasp. His long, calloused fingers—stiff and pale from years of disuse—suddenly curled inward, clutching at the heavy cotton bedsheets with terrifying, primal strength. The knuckles turned white as iron muscles corded along his forearms.

Then, his eyes opened.

They were not the glazed, empty eyes of a man waking from routine sleep. They were pitch black, burning with a cold, absolute fury, and radiating a razor-sharp, terrifying awareness. Those dark eyes locked instantly onto Mia’s terrified face, piercing through her like daggers.

Outside in the hallway, the chaotic clatter of the falling tray and the screaming medical alarms broke the quiet of the executive wing.

“What was that noise?!” a voice barked from the corridor.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps thundered toward suite 404.

Mia froze beside the shattered coffee cups, paralyzed by a mixture of shock and sheer horror. Before she could crawl away, the heavy double doors burst open, and three armed private security guards rushed into the room with weapons drawn.

Trailing closely behind them were Julian Vance and Dr. Alistair.

Julian stepped across the threshold, his expression a mask of manufactured concern that instantly melted away when his eyes landed on the hospital bed.

For one naked, unguarded second, absolute, primal terror destroyed the calm composure on Julian’s face. His jaw slackened, his color drained completely, and his eyes bulged as he stared at his older brother—the brother he had poisoned, betrayed, and left to rot—sitting upright, breathing heavily, and glaring directly at him with murder in his eyes.

“Get down!” one of the armed guards bellowed, snapping out of his surprise and leveling the barrel of a suppressed handgun directly at Mia’s chest. “On your knees! Now!”

Tears streaming down her face, Mia dropped frantically to her knees, sinking straight into the puddle of spilled espresso. The sharp shards of broken porcelain cut through her thin catering pants, biting into her skin, but she didn’t even feel the pain.

“I slipped!” she sobbed, raising her hands defensively. “I’m just a waitress! I swear I didn't mean to—I just slipped!”

Julian Vance recovered his composure with chilling speed, though a fine sheen of cold sweat glistened on his forehead. He slowly turned his gaze from the bed toward Dr. Alistair.

No words passed between them. No instructions were spoken aloud.

But in the frozen, lethal silence of the room, none were needed.

Mia understood the silent communication instantly, her blood running cold. She was the sole witness to a high-level corporate assassination plot, and she had just accidentally awakened the very man Julian had spent two years trying to murder. In the ruthless underworld ruled by the Vance family, witnesses to betrayal did not survive.

Julian slowly slid his hand inside his tailored jacket, resting his fingers near a concealed holster.

“Clear the room,” Julian ordered quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. “The shock has caused severe neurological spasms. The girl is an industrial spy. Terminate her immediately, and sedate my brother before he causes further self-harm.”

The guard nearest to Mia racked the slide of his firearm, aiming directly at the center of her forehead.
