Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

The guards hesitated, lowering the angles of their weapons by mere inches as confusion rippled through the security detail. Loyalty in the Vance syndicate was bought, but survival was instinctive, and nobody wanted to execute a target if the true lord of the house was suddenly awake to witness the execution.

“Are you all out of your minds?!” Julian shouted, his voice cracking with rising hysteria as he glared at his men. “He’s a walking corpse! He’s hallucinating! I am the head of this family now! Shoot the girl and sedate him immediately!”

None of the guards moved. They stood frozen, trapped between the immediate command of the panic-stricken brother in the suit and the soul-crushing aura of the syndicate boss sitting upright on the bed.

Dante swung his bare legs over the edge of the mattress, ignoring the violent dizziness that threatened to pull him back into darkness. His bare feet touched the cold hospital floor, right beside the puddle of spilled espresso where Mia was still cowering.

His breathing remained ragged, each intake of air sounding like shattered glass grinding together, but his focus was absolute. He reached down, his large, calloused hand gripping Mia gently by the upper arm, hauling her effortlessly to her feet as if she weighed nothing at all.

“Can you stand?” Dante muttered, his voice barely audible above the screeching medical alarms.

Mia nodded frantically, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she clutched her bruised lip. “Y-yes. I can stand.”

“Stay behind me,” Dante instructed quietly.

He stepped fully off the bed, his tall, muscular frame casting a long, intimidating shadow across the pristine white floor. Despite the hospital gown and the IV lines dangling limply from his arm, he looked less like a recovering patient and more like a predator stepping out of a cage.

Dr. Alistair backed away slowly until his spine pressed against the heavy oak door, his face completely devoid of color. He clutched his electronic tablet to his chest as if it could somehow shield him from what was coming.

“Dante... brother,” Julian stammered, forcing a tense, trembling smile onto his face as he held up his hands defensively. “Thank God you’re awake. There... there’s been a terrible misunderstanding. Alistair and I, we’ve been managing the estate, keeping everything afloat while you were incapacitated. We thought you were gone forever...”

Dante took a slow, deliberate step forward across the room, his bare feet clicking softly against the marble. The silence in the suite was absolute, broken only by the rhythmic dripping of an IV bag swaying on its metal pole.

“You managed my estate, Julian?” Dante asked softly, his tone dangerously calm. “You liquidated three regional shipping hubs, funneled twenty million dollars into offshore accounts in the Caymans, and arranged for my primary physician to administer a slow-acting neuro-toxin disguised as saline.”

Julian’s forced smile vanished entirely, replaced by a mask of naked horror. “That’s... that’s absurd. You have no proof—!”

“Proof?” Dante interrupted, a cold, humorless chuckle rumbling deep within his bruised chest. He turned his head slightly toward the corner of the room, where a small, unassuming black device blinked quietly beneath the ceiling molding. “Every word spoken in this executive suite for the last twenty-four months has been automatically recorded to the syndicate’s master server. A server that only my biometric signature can unlock.”

Julian’s eyes darted toward the ceiling camera, realization crashing down on him like an avalanche. He hadn't just failed to murder his brother; he had walked straight into a trap that had been waiting to snap shut for years.
