Chapter 3 - The Broken Glass of Every Breath

The air in suite 404 felt thick, heavy with the metallic tang of blood, ozone, and impending death.

Dante Vance sat rigidly against the raised head of the hospital bed. Two years of induced paralysis had left his skin pale and his frame lean, but the sheer predatory aura radiating from him had not diminished by a single fraction. His chest heaved as he fought for oxygen against the plastic ventilator tube that still snaked down his throat, keeping his lungs artificially inflated.

The realization of what his brother had done—the slow poisoning, the staged coma, the betrayal orchestrated while he lay helpless—flooded his mind with a cold, calculating rage that burned hotter than any fever.

He looked past the armed guard, past the trembling waitress bleeding on the floor, and fixed his pitch-black eyes entirely on Julian.

Julian flinched under that gaze, taking an involuntary half-step backward. Despite his brother’s weakened physical state, the sheer weight of Dante’s presence made Julian feel like a cornered animal.

“Do it,” Julian hissed to the armed guard, nodding toward Mia. “End it.”

The guard tightened his finger around the trigger.

Mia squeezed her eyes shut, biting her lip so hard she tasted copper. She braced herself for the impact of the bullet, her mind flashing to her mother waiting at home, wondering why her daughter never came back from a simple catering shift.

Suddenly, a horrific, tearing sound echoed through the room.

Dante reached up with his bare hands, his fingers wrapping around the thick plastic tubing of the ventilator attached to his throat. With a brutal, agonizing wrench, he ripped the life-support apparatus straight out of his windpipe.

Monitors shrieked in absolute panic, flashing angry crimson warnings.

Blood spotted Dante’s lips and chin as he coughed violently, his body wracked by spasms as his lungs struggled to remember how to draw air independently. Every single breath he took sounded like grinding broken glass, a rasping, horrific rattle that echoed off the marble walls.

Two hospital nurses shrieked in horror and rushed forward to restrain him, but Dante swept his arm out with a speed that defied belief, shoving them back with terrifying force.

He gripped the metal guardrail of the bed, his knuckles turning white, and forced his upper body forward. His voice, when it finally tore past his ruined, bloodied throat, was nothing more than a harsh, gravelly whisper.

Yet, that single whisper carried the absolute, unyielding weight of an emperor commanding an army.

“Let... her... go.”

The two words dropped into the room like lead weights.

Every single armed guard, trained mercenaries paid top dollar by Julian’s syndicate, froze mid-motion. The muscle gripping the trigger of the gun pointed at Mia locked up. They knew that voice. They knew the man who owned it. Even half-dead, emerging from a two-year artificial sleep, Dante Vance commanded a level of primal terror that no amount of money could override.

Julian’s face twisted in sheer panic. “He’s delirious! Brain hypoxia! Shoot the girl before she—!”

“Shut your mouth, Julian,” Dante rasped, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. He turned his burning, black eyes toward his younger brother, a terrifying, humorless smirk touching the corners of his blood-stained lips. “You had two years... and you still couldn't finish the job.”
