Chapter 6 - The Weight of an Accidental Debt

Silence settled over suite 404—a heavy, suffocating silence filled with the echoes of violence and betrayal.

Dante stood motionless near the shattered window, his chest rising and falling heavily as he fought to regulate his breathing. The physical toll of tearing out his own ventilator and engaging in a physical altercation after two years of complete immobility was immense. A thin line of blood continued to trickle down his chin from his abused throat, staining the pristine white collar of his hospital gown.

He closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting the wave of dizziness pass. When he opened them again, he looked down.

Mia was still standing near the edge of the bed, hugging her arms tightly around herself. Her cheap catering uniform was stained with dark espresso and smeared with dust from her fall. A small drop of blood still trickled from the cut on her inner lip where her teeth had caught it during the collision. She looked small, terrified, and utterly out of place in the opulent, brutal world she had accidentally stumbled into.

Dante turned slowly, his heavy footsteps muffled against the floor as he walked back toward her.

Mia flinched, stepping backward until her spine hit the metal frame of the medical cart. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She had just witnessed a mafia lord dismantle a corporate assassination plot in less than three minutes; she had no illusions about what might happen to a lowly waitress who knew too much.

“P-please,” Mia whispered, her voice trembling uncontrollably as fresh tears welled in her eyes. “I didn't see anything. I swear to God, I won't say a word to anyone. You can trust me. Just let me go home to my mother.”

Dante stopped just a few feet away from her. Up close, his towering height and raw, intimidating aura were overwhelming. He didn't smile, nor did he offer immediate reassurance. Instead, his dark, impenetrable eyes scanned her face—taking in the faded uniform, the trembling hands, the blood on her lip, and the desperate, brave defiance hidden deep within her eyes.

He reached out slowly, raising his large, calloused hand.

Mia instinctively squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for the worst.

Instead of a blow, she felt the gentle, warm brush of his thumb against her cheekbone, lightly wiping away a stray tear.

“You slipped,” Dante said, his voice deep, raspy, and stripped of its previous menace, leaving behind something surprisingly resonant.

Mia opened her eyes slowly, blinking through her tears in utter bewilderment. “What?”

“You slipped on coffee,” Dante repeated, a faint, ghost of a smirk touching his lips despite the pain in his throat. “You tumbled through a door you were forbidden to enter. You ruined a multi-million-dollar conspiracy simply because you couldn't maintain your footing on a polished floor.”

“I’m sorry,” Mia stammered, sniffing softly. “I’m just a waitress. I shouldn't even have been on this floor.”

“No,” Dante corrected softly, his dark eyes holding hers with an intense, unwavering focus. “If you hadn't slipped, my brother would have successfully shut off my life-support systems by Tuesday. You didn't just stumble into a room, Mia Sutton. You accidentally woke a dead man.”

Mia’s jaw dropped slightly. “You... you know my name?”

“I know everything that happens in my hospital, and I certainly know the name of the person who just saved my life,” Dante replied, dropping his hand back to his side. He reached into the pocket of a discarded jacket hanging on the nearby chair, pulled out a sleek, gold-engraved business card, and pressed it gently into her trembling palm.

“What is this?” she whispered, looking down at the heavy metal card embossed with an intricate crest.

“That is an open line,” Dante said, his tone turning absolute and unyielding once more. “As of right now, your mother’s medical debts are fully paid in full. Your rent is covered for the next ten years. And if anyone—any corporate executive, any corrupt doctor, any loan shark—ever looks at you the wrong way, you call that number.”

Mia stared at the card, then back up at his rugged, striking face, her mind completely spinning. “I can’t accept this. I just... I just wanted to deliver coffee.”

“Life doesn't care about what you planned, Mia,” Dante murmured, taking a slow step closer, his gaze softening into something deeply protective. “It cares about choices. You defended a stranger on a sidewalk once upon a time, and you broke open a cage for me today. In my world, debts are always paid in full.”
