Chapter 10 - FOREVER AFTER

The sun dipped low beneath the horizon, casting shades of amber, violet, and deep rose across the Sicilian coastline visible from the estate's high western terrace.

The evening air was warm and carried the sweet scent of sea salt and citrus blossoms. The guests had all departed, leaving the expansive gardens quiet and still under a canopy of emerging stars.

Inside the grand family parlor, the fireplace crackled with a gentle, comforting warmth. Mia had finally worn herself out, falling fast asleep upstairs in her newly decorated room, tucked beneath a mountain of blankets with her favorite stuffed rabbit clutched tightly in her arms.

Elena stood by the open terrace doors, wrapped in a light cashmere shawl, looking out at the glittering expanse of the Mediterranean sea. The very same sea where she had once cast her fears away, and the very same sea that now felt like a horizon of endless possibility rather than a boundary of escape.

Footsteps sounded softly on the parquet floor behind her, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of Lorenzo’s arms sliding around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked quietly, his voice a low, steady rumble against her back.

"I was thinking about the clock in the study," Elena whispered, a soft smile touching her lips. "That tick. For six months, every time I heard it, I felt like time was running out. Like we were living on borrowed hours."

Lorenzo turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him, his hands resting securely on her hips. The ambient firelight danced across his sharp features, highlighting the fierce, unwavering loyalty in his eyes.

"That clock only counts down the past, Elena," Lorenzo said, his voice absolute and certain. "From now on, we don't look back. Every second belongs to us."

Elena reached up, her fingers tracing the line of his jaw, feeling the slight stubble and the warmth of his skin—real, breathing, and completely present.

"Forever?" she asked softly, testing the word against the quiet night air.

Lorenzo captured her hand, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to her palm before locking his fingers with hers.

"Forever," he answered.

And as he pulled her in for a deep, lingering kiss that sealed away every ghost of their past, the estate stood tall and silent in the night—no longer a fortress guarding secrets, but a true home protecting everything that mattered.
