Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

The oak door of the private study clicked shut, sealing out the silent, tense stares of the men who had been dismissed with a single, slicing wave of Lorenzo’s hand.

The room was vast, dominated by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and smelling faintly of aged leather, cedar, and expensive scotch. The golden clock still ticked on the mantelpiece, its steady rhythm the only sound breaking the heavy air.

Mia had finally grown quiet, her thumb tucked into the corner of her mouth as she rested her head against Lorenzo’s broad shoulder. In the harsh light of the office lamps, the resemblance between the man and the child was no longer just a haunting suspicion—it was an undeniable, glaring reality. The shape of the brow, the slope of the nose, the specific, piercing color of the eyes.

Elena stood by the doorway, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as if holding herself together. Every breath felt shallow. Every heartbeat was a drumroll leading to an execution.

"Explain," Lorenzo said. His voice was low, devoid of the theatrical fury she had anticipated, which somehow made it infinitely more terrifying. He didn't look at her yet; his gaze was fixed on the soft curls of the little girl sleeping lightly against him.

"I didn't plan this," Elena whispered, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to steady it. "She wandered. She doesn't know—she's three, Mr. Moretti. She doesn't understand titles or names. She just saw a tall man in a dark suit and... God help me, she thought..."

"She called me Daddy," Lorenzo interrupted, his tone chillingly flat. He finally turned his head, his blue-gray eyes locking onto hers. "Children do not invent words out of thin air, Elena. Especially not a child raised in strict isolation, in the servants' quarters, hidden away from the world. Why?"

"There is no why," Elena lied, the desperation leaking into her voice. "It was a mistake. A child's confusion. I’ll pack our things tonight. We'll be gone before dawn. You won't ever have to look at us again."

Lorenzo slowly stood up, carefully shifting Mia so she wouldn't wake. He walked over to the mahogany desk, gently setting the child down on a deep leather sofa and draping his own custom wool jacket over her like a blanket. Only then did he turn back to Elena, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate strides.

He stopped just inches away. Elena had to tilt her head back to look up at him, her chest tightening.

"Three years ago," Lorenzo murmured, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that scraped against her nerves, "a private jet crashed off the coast of Sicily. Onboard was a woman who had tried to steal from me, a woman who vanished into the night with secrets that could have brought my entire organization down. They told me she died in the wreckage. They told me there were no survivors."

Elena’s blood ran cold. The color drained completely from her face.

"They didn't tell me," Lorenzo continued, his eyes narrowing as he traced the panic in her expression, "that she was pregnant. They didn't tell me she changed her name, dyed her hair, and spent the next three years hiding right under my nose as a domestic cleaner in my own estate."

"I had no choice," Elena breathed out, the dam finally breaking. Tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks, but she didn't bother to wipe them away. "If I stayed, you would have killed me. Or worse, you would have taken my child and raised her in this viper's nest. I ran to protect her from you."

"From me?" Lorenzo let out a dark, humorless laugh that held no amusement, only a jagged edge of absolute devastation. "You thought I would harm my own blood?"

"I didn't know she was yours!" Elena cried out, the long-buried anguish finally tearing through her defenses. "When I left, everything was a blur of violence and betrayal. I didn't know who to trust. And when she was born with your eyes... God help me, I prayed every single day that she would look like anyone else in the world except the man who owned the underworld!"

The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating. Lorenzo stared at her, the mask of the ruthless mafia boss slipping away to reveal the raw, fractured man underneath. He reached out, his large hand hesitating for a fraction of a second before his fingers gently brushed against her tear-stained cheek.

Before either of them could speak, the sharp, frantic chiming of a secure phone on the desk cut through the room.

Lorenzo’s expression hardened instantly. The domestic vulnerability vanished, replaced by cold, calculated steel. He answered the call without taking his eyes off Elena.

"Speak," he commanded into the receiver.

As the voice on the other end delivered its message, the color drained from Lorenzo's face, and a dangerous, lethal aura filled the room. The enemies they thought were dead had found them. And Mia was right in the crosshairs.
