Chapter 3 - THE WOLF AT THE DOOR

The encrypted phone clicked dead with a soft electronic beep, but the silence that lingered in the study felt heavier than an explosion.

Lorenzo lowered the receiver slowly to the mahogany desk. His fingers, usually steady as marble, tightened around the edge of the wood until the knuckles turned white. When he looked back up at Elena, the brief flicker of human anguish she had seen moments ago had been entirely replaced by a predatory, ice-cold focus.

"Who was that?" Elena asked, her voice shaking as she stepped closer to the sofa where Mia lay sleeping under Lorenzo's coat.

"Vance," Lorenzo said, the name dropping like a lead weight. "And he didn't call to negotiate."

Elena felt the room tilt. Julian Vance—the ruthless, exiled capo who had tried to usurp Lorenzo's empire three years ago, the very man whose betrayal had forced Elena to flee for her life in the dead of night. Vance believed Elena had taken a ledger containing the locations of every offshore account and weapon cache he owned. If Vance knew Elena was here, and worse, if he knew about Mia...

"He's here," Lorenzo stated, reading the terror on her face with absolute clarity. "Or rather, his men have breached the outer perimeter. They tracked the signal from the dock workers you spoke to yesterday in town. Careless, Elena."

"I wore a hood, I wore a mask—"

"Vance doesn't need a face to track a ghost," Lorenzo cut her off sharply, striding toward a concealed panel behind the bookshelf. He pressed a biometric scanner, and the heavy wood slid open to reveal a hidden armory lined with tactical rifles, submachine guns, and rows of black steel ammunition magazines. "He wants what he thinks you stole. And now, he knows about the child."

Elena rushed to the sofa, scooping Mia into her arms. The little girl stirred, letting out a soft, sleepy murmur before burying her face into Elena's neck, her small hands clutching the fabric of Elena's blouse.

"We have to leave," Elena whispered frantically, looking around the room as if searching for another exit. "There must be a service tunnel, a car—"

"The estate is locked down," Lorenzo said, already strapping a heavy leather holster containing a Beretta 9mm across his chest and sliding a sleek, suppressed carbine from its rack. "Every exit is covered. If you walk out that front door right now, Vance's snipers will turn you both into targets before you reach the fountain."

"Then what do we do? Just wait here to be slaughtered?" Elena's voice cracked, the adrenaline surging through her veins with paralyzing intensity.

Lorenzo stopped, his hand resting on the bolt of his rifle. He turned his head, his piercing eyes locking onto hers with an absolute, unyielding intensity.

"You stay right behind this desk," Lorenzo commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. "You keep the child quiet. And you trust me."

Before Elena could reply, the muffled sound of a distant explosion shook the mansion's foundation. Dust drifted down from the ornate plaster ceiling, and the warning klaxons of the estate's internal security system began to wail, flashing a dull, emergency red across the marble floors.

The war had come to their doorstep. And Lorenzo Moretti was about to show the city why men whispered his name in the dark.
