Chapter 4 - BREACHING THE SANCTUARY

The thick oak door of the study rattled under the impact of a heavy concussion grenade detonating somewhere down the main corridor.

The lights flickered twice before dying completely, plunging the grand room into deep shadows illuminated only by the rhythmic, pulsing crimson glow of the emergency backup strobes. The air instantly filled with the acrid, choking scent of cordite and burning drywall.

Elena pressed herself flat against the reinforced concrete pillar behind the massive mahogany desk, her arms locked tightly around Mia. The little girl was crying now, terrified by the screeching alarms and the thunderous concussions echoing through the halls.

"Hush, baby, hush," Elena whispered fiercely into Mia’s curls, blinking back her own blinding tears as she tried to muffle the child’s sobs against her shoulder.

Across the room, standing completely unfazed in the center of the dim space, was Lorenzo.

He had positioned himself near the private interior doorway, his body angled in a textbook tactical stance. In his right hand, the suppressed carbine was raised, the red dot sight painting a steady line across the threshold. He didn't look back; his entire focus was anchored on the darkness of the hallway beyond.

Bang. Bang-bang.

The muffled reports of suppressed gunfire echoed from just outside the study. Shouts—sharp, tactical orders barked in Italian—cut through the chaos as Lorenzo’s inner security detail engaged Vance’s advance party.

Then, silence fell over the immediate hallway. A heavy, sickening silence.

Lorenzo didn't lower his weapon. He took half a step forward, his boots silent on the marble.

The doorknob of the study slowly began to turn.

Elena stopped breathing. Her fingernails dug into her own palms until the skin threatened to break. She braced herself for the worst—for masked men to flood the room, for the crossfire to tear through the wood of the desk.

The door swung open with a slow, agonizing creak.

A figure in black tactical gear stepped across the threshold, a submachine gun raised and sweeping the room. But before the intruder could acquire his target, Lorenzo moved with terrifying, unnatural speed.

Puff-puff.

The suppressed carbine spat twice. The intruder stiffened instantly, dropping his weapon as he collapsed heavily onto the floor, sliding face-first across the Persian rug.

"Clear the perimeter," a raspy voice muttered from the hallway. A second man stepped over his fallen comrade, raising his rifle directly toward Lorenzo.

Before the second man could squeeze his trigger, a second voice—calm, cultured, and dripping with venom—echoed from the corridor.

"Hold your fire, boys. Let's not ruin the reunion."

A tall, impeccably dressed man stepped into the dim red glow of the study. His silver hair was combed back with ruthless precision, and a thin, cruel smile played across his lips. Julian Vance had arrived.

And his eyes weren't fixed on Lorenzo. They were fixed directly on the trembling woman and child cowering behind the desk.
